Is a little smoke worth worring about?

Today I was driving my 94 HARD on the highway for about 2 miles, I got off and pulled into my driveway. Just for the sake of the car I figured I'd check the oil level and such, when I popped the hood some smoke was coming out of the drivers side of the engine bay, I couldn't really tell where it was from but it smoked for 2-4 minutes. This is white smoke and kinda smelled like oil but not really, what else could this be? I have checked the enginge bay like 5 times since this and all times I see no smoke, just that once. Any thoughts?? BTW: The oil was a little low and I didn't have the time to check other fluids.

Thanks in advance!

Todd

Check the oil level carefully and keep an eye on it for a while. You could be developing some seal leaks. If the level does not drop too fast, you may want to wait until the next timing belt change to replace all the seals.

As long as the car is driven softly it should not leak much. Like Matt says watch the oil level and change those seals when the belt is done.

If it's the crank and cams seals, there will be oil on the bottom of the oil pan. The air blows it onto the exhaust and it smokes. It may be a good idea to make sure it's leaking there and not some where else.

I haven't added anything, except freon and leak dye. Who knows what the previous owner had their level at, Ive only had the car 3 weeks. This isn't just after hard driving, but its worse after hard driving, BTW it is using a FRAM oil filter, aren't thoses supposed to be kinda crap. It looks like the smoke is coming from somewhere under that plastic cover (with throttle under it) and a bit more towards the drivers wheel.

Thanks for all of your help.

That is the usual place smoke comes from. It was my personal experience that Fram filters were not too good but it may just be that the oil filter is clogged up and due for a change. You would know that as most people change the oil after buying a car. As stated above, check that your AFT is not leaking. There are two AFT hoses near the steering column at the rear of the engine. Check them for leaks. The under cover has to come off to check the bottom of the engine, front seal leak.
