Re: The Great Speed Limiter Debate: CLOSED
Patrick told me that the aerodynamic limit was ~153 mph... Neither of us have tested that though! (I haven't even had mine over 100...)

Re: The Great Speed Limiter Debate: CLOSED
For mechanical maximum speed, we get out the gearing... Naturally, these numbers are all hypothetical, based on that the car would have to have the power to overcome its drag losses and still accelerate to redline:
On the stock tranny (4th = .694, final = 3.545), at redline (6500) with 215/55/16 tires, you'll see 199 mph, by the math. For an easy boost, swap in an ECUTune v1.x chip to change the redline, and at 7400 RPM, you'll find 226 mph. I've looked around to see if there is a Subaru transaxle with a higher gear than .694:1, and a diff lower than 3.545:1, but no luck. Anyone? Don't worry too much about that 318 mph yet!

Quote:
When the limit is reached the ECU cuts the sparks. Because at this point you are usually traveling with high revs, it feels like the engine has seized or like the fuel was no more. Rapid unmistakable retardation. It's crude and not nice, and I'm delighted Phil has found a way to switch the damn thing off! Joe
