Help checking Transmission codes

Ok, I must be slow or something, but I tried the following steps to check why my power light flashes 16 times and I cannot get the real code to flash. I drove my car like normal...got home and shut the car off. First a few questions from the instructions below from the svx-iw website:
When turning the ignition 'on'...am I starting the car or just making sure the dash lights up?? (I assume just lighting the dash so all indicator lamps illuminate)
Next to step 5 below, with the car off, do I have to get my screwdriver to push in the shift lock mechanism to move into D? With the ignition off, there is no other way to shift into D right? and will the ignition turn on then?
I think those were the problems I was having...but if someone has done this recently, could you list step by step what you did please?

To perform the self diagnosis test for EXISTING problems:
1) Warm up engine by driving at speeds greater than 12mph.
2) Stop vehicle and turn ignition switch OFF.
3) Turn ignition switch ON and make sure POWER indicator lamp comes on.
4) Turn ignition switch OFF.
5) Move selector lever to D and turn manual switch ON.
6) Turn ignition switch ON.
7) Move selector lever to "3" and turn manual switch OFF.
8) Move selector level to "2" and turn manual switch ON.
9) Move selector lever to "1" and turn manual switch OFF.
10) Partially depress accelerator pedal (to turn idle switch off).
11) Check code as displayed on POWER light. Blinking once every 1/4sec is normal

Don't start the car during this process.
Don't touch the brake during this process. (you need to us the shift lock feature)

Some earlier versions of the shift kit caused the code to be thrown.

I bought my shift kit about 1 year ago or a little over a year ago....You think it's a defective one also?? What's small car's policy about a bad part??

Can anyone confirm that part number above please?. I think it's correct with the diagram on their website.

Here are a couple past threads that covered the shift kit problem. However, at 1 year old yours should be the newer version.

That is the correct part number.

Measure the ohms on your existing resistor. It should be around 10-12ohms.

I did cut the green w/yellow wire long ago.....
I will order a new tranny resistor anyways....and I'll check the ohms currently on the resistor.

I checked the new one I got from subaru and it reads 12.7-13.0 ohms...
I still have to check the vehicle's current resistor.
