Sound stage

If I was asked which system sounds better, I would have to say the single din four channel one.

The double din unit works very well in my everyday car, the sound is good. I have a problem with the passenger door, which causes bassy material to set off buzzes and rattles. This may mean I have it biased to the rear and can't crank it up like I would want to.

The sound from the single din unit with only four channels is superb, I think. The speakers in the door must be full-range speakers, compared to the double-din 6 and a 1/2 inch ones with the tweeters, which are probably mid-range component speakers.

I know Phil & Belha changed their door speakers and got a worthwhile improvement. Theirs is likely to be the six-channel model though. Phil, did you check if you have tweeters in the dash?

Joe

I don't know how concerned you are about sound but might I suggest an 8 inch speaker. I believe you have the room if you make a big enough spacer and take full advantage of the space between the door panel and face of the speaker. I have 6.5 Alpine DDrives hooked up to an Alpine amp and still am not satisfied. If I had it to do again I would opt for the 8's. If you look around companies offer shallow varieties.

Yes Joe, we have the tweeters.

I found a website a while ago selling a module which makes it possible to plug (relatively) modern sony cd changers into old panasonic head units. I have a plan to contact them and see if it's compatible with our system. That might be the solution to our CD changer problem, but it's on the back burner until the transmission is fixed.

I spent last night working on my cooler install. I haven't had much time lately.

First I invented a flushing device using a plastic bottle, a washing machine pump and some hose. Then I used that to flush out the cooler, discovering along the way that a washing machine pump is pretty useless for pumping oil. Then I plumbed the B&M cooler in line with the stock cooler. It's mounted in the area below the battery.

Next I need to make a vent scoop in the plastic liner to channel air up to the cooler. Once that's done I'll have it flat bedded to a transmission shop. Still trying to decide which shop I trust.

Question

Phil,

Is yours the single din unit?

It's a double DIN. The top half is radio and cassette, the bottom half controls the boot-mounted 12 disk changer.

The changer looks very similar to the UK model, which is driven by the single DIN unit. IIRC there are a few minor cosmetic differences.

The JDM magazine hold 6 normal CDs and 6 mini CDs. The UK magazine holds 12 normal CDs. They are interchangable, we tried it on Graham's car in Torquay.

Here's that website, the page of interest is accessed under "Toyota" and "Matsu****a".

At some point I'll pull out the radio, take some photos and email them.

Good to know Phil.

Your top-of-the-range car, chassis CXD as opposed to my CXW I think, your car probably has the same receiver as mine, the top unit.

Below it my cheapie has a singe CD player to match, whereas yours has a single din size CD changer, am I right so far?

That would make sense. The amplifier would be in the cassette receiver, so the feed out to the SIX speakers comes from the upper unit.[*]

One of the boys from the States has said that the door speaker is a mid-range unit, but is fed a full frequency signal. I also read somewhere that there is no crossover unit in the loom. Unless the crossover is built into the receiver before sending signal to the speakers/tweeters, this would seem to be the case.

* The single din 4 channel UK headunit is only configured for 4 speaker out cables. That's why the tweeter holes are empty.

This is good news really. Without changing the head unit, it allows for an immediate upgrade via the door speakers. Replace the full frequency door units with the best midrange/crossover/tweeters you can afford that will fit the slots, you get an immediate fix, better power handling and soundstage.

Those nice French Focal units would do nicely.

Joe

I believe that all the speakers receive a full range signal.

There is allegedly a capacitor soldered onto the back of each tweeter to filter out the bass.

From reading this site I was under the impression that the unit has 4 outputs and the tweeters were wired in parallel with the door speakers. But I admit to never having checked this.

You may be correct about that.

Must check the wiring diagram.
