Drilled rotors worth it??

I am in the market for new rotors, on the front at least. Is it worth getting drilled rotors? Are there really any advantages/disadvantages to getting them over regular rotors? Is there a major price differance? Thanks in advance.

Jim

Hi .Jim, drilled rotors are really becoming a fashion statement. Rotors are drilled to allow space for water to go, instead of causing the pads to aqua plane on the disk. Used mainly for rally work. Drilled rotors are solid disks.
If a ventilated disk, like ours is crossed drilled it interferes with the way centrifugal force flows cool air through the center of the disk. The air enters in the center of the disk at the hub, forcing it through the vents to exit at the out side edge, taking the heat with it. The holes cause air to leak out and in at the wrong places, causing uneven cooling.

They wont help cool the disks, but if you don't care about efficiency, then they have a cool look.

Harvey.

Thumbs down

Another downside to drilled rotors is that they have a tendency to crack over time.

The drilling of the rotors actually causes minute 'stress' cracks to form around the holes. Over time these cracks become enlargened leading to rotor failure.

Slotted or dimpled rotors are a much better buy...

Do a search for Race Concepts and you will find the deal that they will give members here. It is a good price.

My set from Race Concepts should be coming in this week... Slotted and dimpled... I'll let everyone know what I think of them.

Drilled, dimpled, slotted, whatever... I'd expect (needlessly) accelerated pad wear.
