Question Transmission Specialist

Does anyone have a contact for a good transmission specialist in the south that 'knows' SVX gearboxes?

Seems like a negative. Have you tried the resistor fix yet?

Andy,

Not tried the resistor fix yet, been busy and don't know when I'll get the chance. I'm in no great hurry yet as the 'box is only mildly recalcitrant at the moment and is quite a way down my list of priorities. I need to clean the TPS as well in case it's sending dubious messages to the 'box. This could possibly be the root cause of my problems.

Anyway, the car is currently sat powerless as I recharge the battery which was as flat as a particularly flat pancake yesterday.

But I would still like to know of a good, reliable autobox specialist just in case the 'poo hits the propeller' some time.

A big gearbox specialist down here in my neck of the woods is TES Transmissions Ltd in Westbury. Does anyone know anything about them at all?

Monzta

When we had the bearings replaced in the CVT auto 'box of mother-in-law's Micra I spoke to the guy about 'our' trans. He seemed plenty knowledgable about the 4eat, saying he's done them before, it's also used in Nissan 200 and pathfinder etc. He commented it would be nice if the gear packs from Nissan 300 would fit as they are bigger (he didn't specify which dimension).

When I told him the going rate for overhaul by John Mackie (sp?) Transmissions in Glasgow was £1600 he laughed and said he could do it for about half that. I can't remember his name or contact details right now but could look it up. Unfortunately for you he is in Newark, Notts, which is great for me but not so good for you

Check out www.findanengine.co.uk

May be better to fit a s/h than rebuild

Phil,

If you can find any contact details on the Tranny specialist in Newark that would be handy. I'm not averse to driving a few miles when it comes to my cars. I did a 650 mile round trip just to view my SVX and a 500 mile trip for an exhaust for my Monza. Anyway, I'm sure it would be of use to the other members of the forum.

Cheers.

Glenn

Breaker, breaker...

There's a breaker, I think in the York area that I've had some bits off before now. I checked last week to see if he still had the car and he has. For certain, the engine is still there, as I was after the crank pulley (wouldn't let me have it tho'!). I know that the engine is less likely to have been bought than the gbox, but might be worth a punt.

Chris,

Cheers for that, a very handy contact to have indeed. When the time comes to have work on my 'box I don't want to hand my car over to any old Tom, Dick and Harry gearbox place but to someone who understands these transmissions.

Thanks again.

Glenn

Chris, just what do you mean by "up rated"? Reading these tranny threads from you fine folks on the other side of the pond leads me to believe you have better tranny shops there in the UK. Any of the shops here in the states just seem to be able to rebuild to factory specs if at all. Sounds like your shops know a few tricks our do not. Any info we can glean from your experience would be greatly appreciated.

Smile Trany repair

When I went to these guys to have my trany repaired I was asked if I minded harder shifting from the box! I said no! this has alowed them to put in stronger cluth discs in the box which he says will last for ever. Under acceleration the gear changes are harder and feels brisker, and has a different feel to the first box.But it is not as seamless when changing up or down.
