Hot rotors - wheel bearings?
I'm noticing lately that my rear right rotor is considerable hotter (200 - 275) than my rear left. After a long hwy run, the temp was 450 deg F vs 250 on the other side. The temp is acquired by an IR gun. At first I attributed this to a dragging brake pad caused by the caliper piston not retreating. The caliper, rotor and the pads are new but the problem persists. I'm not hearing a roaring type sound but it could be present and I'm simply used to it. Is this a sign of wheel bearing going south?
Assuming it's the wheel bearing, I'll be using a hyd press to do the job. Wish I had the hub tamer tool but oh well. Are there any messages written previously I can refer to for this job? I'll perform a search if needed but that might turn up tons of hits. thanks.

I'd also check the parking brake shoe to make sure it is not dragging on that side.
Pretty neat idea using the infared to check temperature. I wonder what temperature they are at when the bearings are roaring.

thanks for the input. Yes, I backed up on the parking shoe adjustment wheel just to make sure they aren't the culprit.

Had a similar problem. One of the brake pads wore down. Cause: one of the guide pins seized. I've since lubricated the pins on all 4 corners.
No more heat and I also think I have a bearing on the way out.

There is no way in physical terms the wheel bearing can contribute to this level of heat build up. If this was the case, the bearing would collapse over a very short distance. If you think about it, the bearing offers little or no resistance to spinning, as is required. If it was resisting spinning, this would create so much catastrophic heat, it would collapse in short order. Your problem is almost certainly caused by dragging brakes, either the discs[rotor] or the handbrake shoe in the hub. Rotor is my guess. Take out the pads, one side is more likely worn down than the other, that will give you a clue what to lubricate. Joe

Joe,
Very good reasoning. I'll actually remove the parking brake shoes this weekend and run around w/o them to see what happens. If that doesn't cure it, then I'll rig something temporarily to run w/o the rear disc brake pads and check it out. The more I think about it, it has to be parking brake shoes. The new caliper piston is retracting all the way in so there shouldn't be any dragging. Earthworm, I lubed the two pins completely so hopefully that isn't the issue here. Thanks all for the inputs. I'll be in touch. Ali

Hot rotors - update
Ok, in order to eliminate the parking brake drag possibility, I totally removed the shoes. After my drive this morning, I had a squeaking sound from the same brake caliper. The squeak goes away when I stepped on the brake. The rotor is still running about 100 deg hotter than the opposite side. So, it seems that the disc brake pads are rubbing on the rotor while cruising. How the heck does one fix that? The following were changed already: new rotor, new pads and caliper.
Thanks for any suggestion. Ali

hmmm...kink in the brake line perhaps?

Did you replace the slide pins when you replaced the caliper? Even if the piston is retracting, the caliper may not be, causing outbound pad drag and extra heat.
If you didn't replace the pins, did you clean and grease them well? Doug

Thanks for the inputs:
Yes, the pins are cleaned and greased. Didn't think I needed new ones but maybe it's worth a shot. No kinks in the brake line. If that was the case then the brake pads would be more engaged on the rotors and that isn't the case here. I think I'll swap the pads from left to right just to see what happens. Don't have anything to lose at this point. I'll also push the axle out and look for anything obvious in the bearing dept. Ali
