Transmission
This is another SVX transmission issue but unlike any I have read about on here thus far. I have a 1992 SVX that will not shift out of 1st gear until after the car is up to operating temperature. After the car is up to the proper temp., it shifts fine through all the gears. Does anyone have any ideas about this?
I also have a situation with the steering wheel. The verticle adjustment is either all the way up or all the way down. Since I bought the car, it has been this way. Is this an all the way up or down situation by design or is it a problem with the column adjustment? Thanks for your input. All information is appreaciated. Curt |

Oh I finally get to help some one
course anyone else here could too..I just got here first...and I'm answering the really easy one... The steering wheel adjustment for tilt is directly centered on the underside of the column. The adjustment that you are using is for if you like your steering wheel really low lets say, and its hard to get out. Using THAT lever will shift the wheel from all the way up, to the point that you set witht the lever centered underneith. nifty huh? SVX's are awesome As for the actually question thats important....no clue, but best of luck with it. Hopefully some one else here can answer that one. |

Yep, it is as you say. the adjustment lever is under the column. I use it. The problem is that it is all the way up or all the way down. Is the design that way or is there suppose to be adjustments between UP and DOWN? Many cars have such steering wheel adjustments but have mulitple positions to accomodate different sized people.

Pull on that lever and move the wheel to where u want it to be and then let go of the lever. It should lock in that position.

Yes, there should be a number of "stops" between full-up and full-down if you're using the correct lever, up inside a bit of a "well" dead center under the column. The "release" lever for ingress/egress is on the door side of the column, and lets the column go full up when released and back to preset when relocked, and the telescope adjust is more or less between the other two.

In answer to your first question, the only thing I can find on a quick once-over is that the lock up torque converter is prevented from operation until ATF temp sensor measures fluid temp at 50 degress F, but nothing else off hand.

Thanks Gentlemen (I assume that fits all of you). I am a captive in the army at the moment but will be traveling back by home next week and will investigate some of what each of you have provided. I have not had SVX long so I am still becoming familiar with it. Actually I am I have never owned an Asian car before (mostly european). The car has about 128,000 miles and the transmission was rebuilt by the previous owner about 20,000 miles ago (2 years) according to documentation I found in the car. I have yet to get under it and check what is optional. From reading other transmission issues, I assume it should have an added oil cooler with filter. I will install each if it does not already have them. I checked with the dealer and the transmission temp sensor is about $45.00 but I know I can get it cheaper on line. The problem seems to be totally related to the temperature of the car. I will assume the sensor is the problem. I am, however, not remembering the indicator lighting system operating in a suspious manner. I will also pay more attention to this when I get home for a few days next week.
I will also check for the preset postion of the steering wheel when I get there. Again, thanks all for your input and insight. Curt |

Curt, I wouldn't be too quick with the ATF Temp sensor, as the lock up torque converter is all about the 3-4 (OD) shift and shouldn't have anything to do with "trapping" you in low gear til temp rises. In the mean time I'll take a look at the manual a bit more and see if there appear to be any other temp-sensitive issues with the trans. Sorry to mis-lead you.

hrmmm.... i too have the telescopic tilt wheel that only goes all the way up or all the way in my lap. not at all easy ti get in or out of unless it's all the way up (kind of annoying).

As to what is causing the problem, ? to be temp related, I doubt it is the throttle sensor, as there would be other problems. The speed sensor, can't see temp worrying that one, but you never know, it could. This leaves the valve body. The solenoids and the shift valves are located there, and can be temp affected. If the valve body has a coating of varnish, in could cause the temp to affect the shifting, to cause the problem. What to do????????? If all else fails. I would drop the pan and check the valve body to see if it has a coating of varnish on it, if so I would get it stripped and cleaned. Other than that I have no idea. Harvey.

I have this problem in another transmission of mine. ...or rather, if never shifts out of first. If you put it in second and press the manual button, it should force it to go into second. This doesn't work on mine. This test by itself should pretty much eliminate any electrical problems. To be sure, I unplugged the TCU, which means the transmission will become locked in third. This also did not work.
In my case, something is clearly stuck. You are fortunate that the problem goes away when things warm up. I am too lazy to bother opening it up and having a look. I suspect it's probably just some gunk stuck in a bad spot, but again - I'm too lazy and I really don't need the transmission right now. |

Hello all and thanks for all the additional input.
Where is the TCU for the SVX. I think I should unplug it and see what happens. I will go from there. As for the steering wheel portion of my problems. I knew there had to be some simple sollution. Those of you that gave me information on the setting of the preset wheel possition, Thank you! It is much more of a pleasure to drive without having the steering wheel rubbing my legs. Now if only the transmission were an easier fix. Thanks again, Curt |
