Manual Transmission Replacement

Hello all,

So after having fun times in the 5spd it appears my trans no longer likes 2nd gear. See the video below. What options are out there for direct replacement. I have the 3.90 5spd so if I have to go with a different gear ratio I can. Also it is a cable so hydraulic is out. Now is it possible to have hydraulic converted to cable? If so there are many cheaper options than attempting to find a direct replacement for what I have. I do not want to have to install the necessary stuff for hydraulic operation.

What transmissions can I get to replace my 5spd Cable 3.90 trans? Or should I just seek having a rebuild (minus removal / install labor as I'll do that myself).

Thanks

Re: Manual Transmission Replacement

you can use a NA Hydraulic Transmission, as they can be swapped to Cable, you just can't use a Turbo Transmission with a cable.

Re: Manual Transmission Replacement

Hard to tell from the video. Are you skipping 2nd? Rebuilding a 5 speed is a lot easier than an auto. Heck I rebuilt my 3 speed Chevy tranny when I was 17 years old. It is all Mechanical. I would check with a tranny shop or a shop that u are Sure has done it before. Old school ( 55 year old ) could be a chipped gear, bent fork or bad Syncros

IIRC 2nd gear is part of the main shaft. Aka, about $600 just for the input shaft. You can pick up whole transmissions all day for much, much cheaper.

Re: Manual Transmission Replacement

Wow BITD you could replace everything one at a time. Sorry I forgot about improvements. I pulled my 56 Chevy one apart and removes the Syncros and the 2 nd and 3 gear. Go looking for a replacement tranny. My PO had 2 gears replaced in my tranny. .??

If you listen I go First -> Second. There is a nice noise that accompanies only second gear. I do plan on calling around for shops but I have a distinct feeling it will cost a lot.

What about if I go with a different gear ratio? will the rear diff need to be messed with?

Also I can find new Impreza / legacy / etc lower milage used for cheap. (2008ish). Anyone attempted to use a newer transmission ? (the non turbo hydraulic models).

Re: Manual Transmission Replacement

2008+ Impreza transmissions you will have a problem with as the manual trans VSS were finally integrated into the ABS wheel speed sensors. (auto's started around 04ish) These transmissions have no VSS port on the trans and will not be able to work with an SVX. You can use hydraulic non turbo transmissions by simply swapping over the fork and few other bits from your current trans in the car.
And yes, you'll have to mess around with the rear to swap the LSD over if you change gear ratios.

Thanks. Checking the ratios listed here I have an idea of what to replace it with. I currently have found a lot of 200x-2007 2.5i impreza 5spds for 500 bucks (pickup local). According to the chart the final drive is 3.9, assuming it has the VSS like Nate pointed out should these work?

Yes, and yes, those will have the VSS. Subaru began switching to ABS operated VSS in the autos around 2004ish but for whatever reason, the manuals kept the VSS2 on the transmission for a few extra years.

Re: Manual Transmission Replacement

Ended up with an 07 transmission. I am pulling to engine and transmission in one go. Going to replace the head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, check the timing belt and rear main seal.

Anyone have any other suggestions while its out?

Re: Manual Transmission Replacement

That sounds like a broken or chipped gear tooth.
