Alternator belt pulley's

I have a general question about the pulleys that the alternator belt rides on. I recently started hearing the squealing when starting up the car. Well it usually goes away after a short while but Friday it stayed and the belt eventually broke less than a mile from home. I was able to drive it home without any power steering with no problem. I looked at the pulleys today and without the engine on the top two pulleys moved freely with no noise. The pulley that the ac belt goes on didn't move at all and the tension pulley? was locked. I turned the engine on and the dual ac pulley moved fine. Still the tension pulley did not move. Is this the likely culprit that I need to replace. I have a new belt but did not put it on after seeing this. I have had for a while now while driving four of the dash lights would come on and off while driving randomly. I have had this car for seventeen years now and never had to replace it yet. Any advice on this appreciated. Also I don't have an a/c belt on because the a/c clutch went a while ago.

Re: Alternator belt pulley's

The idler/tension pulleys should move freely and smoothly. It is not uncommon for them to wear out and need replacement. They are easy to replace.
The accessory drive pulleys should rotate freely with the accessory.
The crankshaft pulley rotates only when the engine rotates.

Re: Alternator belt pulley's

Thanks for the reply. I ran into a Subaru mechanic by chance at the local grocery store and he mentioned that the local auto parts store might carry the idler pulley I need. Advance has a part #89136 that I think I need but they had closed for the day. Might remove the old one to compare at the store if they have it in stock. Will know tomorrow. Thanks again.

Florida.. With no A/C...

Treat yourself right..

admittedly, plus a few bucks to get it vacuumed and then charged..

Just sayin''.. the aerodynamics of an SVX make for great ventilation, especially with the sunroof open, but, when you're stuck in traffic... ice is nice!

Re: Alternator belt pulley's

Alternator and A/C idler bearings dont last very long, relatively cheap and easy to replace, makes it all better.
