Re: Who let all this riff raff into the room?

YOU ASKED FOR IT. Everyone was complaining about members not being able to get into the site because they had to wait a day or two. Some were too long, like a week or more, but we were doing the best we could. We have loosened that, and this is what you get. I was told that without fixing this, this site would die. Well, you can see what happens when we open it a little. Which is better? Porn and spam, or a little wait for people to get approved? You can't have it both ways. I will now wait for thr ****e storm.

Re: Who let all this riff raff into the room?

Wow, big shocker, you go back and blame everyone else. We suggested how many different ways to possibly fix the problem.
I personally would rather have it this way, but give us mods that are actually on here full power to clean up the vendor section as well. I don't mind the crap. It gets cleaned up. But taking 2+ months for account approval is not "a little time" as you put it. And it's not like there wasn't already more spam on in the past year or so compared to years ago anyway.

Agreed. If new members cannot join the forum, they will go somewhere that they can easily get approved and start posting. This isn't the only SVX forum, and if you keep sending new members elsewhere due to this problem, this site will die - with or without the spam.

I'm no web expert, but it can't be that difficult when every other forum I join is able to both approve new members quickly and keep out the spam.

And for the record, I'd take the spam over the increased lack of activity due to unapproved new members any day...

Re: Who let all this riff raff into the room?

Alright children clam down. Like you haven't seem some spam in your life. But seriously, there is a solution that can be reached. I agree 2 months for approval is a long time. How do other sites stop this from happening? Maybe look at other solutions and tailor it to our needs?

Re: Who let all this riff raff into the room?

Another site I am on for my motorcycle ( Trike ) approves quickly. I am going to contact them and ask what their approval method is . We have little spam over the years and 20 members enroll each month .

Re: Who let all this riff raff into the room?

I am catching up in this thread, but if your only finding people based on locations (Nigeria for example) then one would think simply removing the ability to set your location as one of those countries would be an option. But.... then people will just sign-up with whatever country option exists, kind of defeating the purpose.

Maybe IP blocking, or country of origin filters, or maybe just having an admin/mod manually clear out the junk user accounts is the combination option.

Re: Who let all this riff raff into the room?

I'm told by one of my fellow local admins that a good share of car forums have been getting high spam traffic recently (including the one we run, of course). We switched from captcha to a question to answer, and the source just changed from exclusively Chinese IPs to a combination of Chinese and other worldwide IPs (mostly European).

Try not to cuss at the admins too much; no matter what they do, it'll be considered wrong. Anyone who's willing to do volunteer work in a forum is probably not doing a half-assed effort, and a no-win situation like this can only be tended to by a best guess.

Ridding the world of spam is not something any admins can do; I volunteer the loudest cussers to find the solution!

I don't think it will be viewed as a no win situation. There are solutions, lets come to one. We obviously can't just approve everyone automatically. As we can see that results in masses of spam. Why not allow some of the other mods the ability to approve new members? That way the burden is not placed on one or two people.

If this is absolutely not going to happen, I am sure we can come up with another solution. We all want to see this forum continue to thrive, people come and people go. Interest changes and people will leave. But if we can't get new members in the base will dwindle and dry out. Lets stop pointing fingers and make a solution. Some are willing to volunteer time and effort, it is up to others to accept it.

Earl you can vet new members, block some, some will get through, but that is the job of the moderators to watch the board.
There are enough mods on here to ensure that 20 posts of this type, on all forums, do not stay for 2 hours.
I think this is not acceptably.

Harvey.

Re: Who let all this riff raff into the room?

I say this should be a pay site. You cant even get Air for Free at most places. Why cant every member pay like $20 a year that would fix the problem, and give the site upgrades it needs and deserves.

This is not a Rolls Royce forum, you cannot make it exclusively a pay one.
As Icingdeath said, we need a captcha and two moderators whose main task is reviewing and dis/approving new members on a daily basis. This is effectively done whenever a msg is sent to his inbox mentioning a new member is waiting approval.

But the biggest issue I see is that 100% of the moderators are from the American continent, so the watch timeline is interrupted for at least 7 hours each day.

Checking new members is something that needs to be handled by mods that check the forum very often, like at least daily. People don't have the attention span these days to wait around for anything more than a couple days at the absolute most for approval.
