Rough Shift from 1st to 2nd @ Lower RPM

Hi Guys!

I just got my SVX over a week ago. She's a beauty. Well cared for, 107K miles, looks pristine inside and out ... will post pics soon.

Anyways, I have no idea who to ask, so here it is. The tranny was replaced at around 70K but I've noticed as I drive it that the tranny shifts VERY rough if it's going into 2nd under 1700 rpm (Thank you Los Angeles Traffic), semi-rough from 1700 to 3000, and smooth above 3000. I've checked the fluid and everything looks good. Is this normal?

fairly sure this is normal, my trans was replaced and it shifts a bit hard going from 1st to 2nd.

It's most likely the brake band or the throttle position sensor. I've yet to get it fixed, but mine has doing this too, with a non-original transmission. It's been this way for 3 years without getting any worse. To avoid it, just use manual mode with your car in 2nd whenever you're in traffic.

It's not related to the brake band at all. It's pretty typical for all Phase 1 Subarus to develop a harsh 1-2 shift. If anything, the resistor behind the battery may need a check, but I usually never worry about it. TPS could also be possible, but usually will cause other shifting issues as well.

Really? Everyone, I mean EVERYONE has told me it's one of those two. Maybe I should bring my car to you and have you look at it...

Re: Rough Shift from 1st to 2nd @ Lower RPM

Mine has been doing this for years. It's annoying as hell, but hasn't gotten any worse. I've learned to adapt my driving to avoid it for the most part, but it still bothers me.

Resistor behind the battery? What resistor is this? I would really love to make this go away...

Just about every person on this network whom I've asked. Obviously with the exception of you.

Me too... I always feel like I'm going to shred my transmission in half. Does anyone have a picture of the resistor that needs to be checked? I'm not sure I can picture where it could be.

Re: Rough Shift from 1st to 2nd @ Lower RPM

Mine used to do this.

Installing the TCU from ECUTune seems to have solved it (about 18 months ago).

Re: Rough Shift from 1st to 2nd @ Lower RPM

Mine had the hard shift b/t first and second since I bought it. Got the TCU from Ecutune, helped a lot for the higher gears, but still rough b/t first and second. Checked the resistor, open circuit (I was also throwing a code for solenoid A). Installed a 25 watt 27 ohm resistor (NDT I believe) and that took care of the hard shifts, and eliminated the code.

Here you go. It is mounted behind the battery.

Where would I buy a new resistor from? Is it really as simple as a plug in and go part? That's awesome if so.

Many options, a used from one of the many SVX part outs, or you can buy them new from Subaru. There are also a few threads on how to modify it with a generic resistor and a I know svxfiles sells custom ones.

Re: Rough Shift from 1st to 2nd @ Lower RPM

If you can find a good used one, that'd be the easiest way to go. I bought one from Radio Shack (web only) for like a buck and a half, $8 shipped, and modified the original resistor bracket to accept the new resistor. Four small crimp connectors (solder would probably be better, but my iron failed to heat up), Two 3" pieces of 14GA primary wire, and four 1" pieces of heat shrink to make sure nothing shorts....works great, and only took about 1/2 hour to complete.

PS - If you go this route, the wires leading to the original resistor are very short. Cut them as close to the old resistor as possible to make splicing easier/possible.
