Diameter and thread for child seat anchor?

Hey, does anybody know what sort of bolt fits in the child seat anchor mount on the parcel shelf? I'm looking at hardware options to make something functional, since the factory anchor is no longer available.

Some lucky hardware supplier is gonna love my one-bolt order!

I'll get a picture and some measurements in a couple of hours.

Re: Diameter and thread for child seat anchor?

The bolt is 5/16-18 x 1 3/8" (I thought it was m8x1.5 at first, untill I saw the 5/16 stamped on the head and checked it against some die's)
Here are some pics and a quick diagram I drew.

I'm pretty sure I have one of these picking around somewhere. I'll dig for it and let you know if I come up with one.

Re: Diameter and thread for child seat anchor?

Dave, you're awesome. Thank you very much. That should make it much easier to find off-the-shelf parts.

I'm not surprised the bolts are not metric. In order to meet federal safety regs, there are specific bolt sizes required, and those regs are not in metric units.

Re: Diameter and thread for child seat anchor?

I'm pretty sure I have one too, and since my kiddies are beyond car seats I could send it to you, if Mike621 can't find one.

I might need it back in about 15-20 years for grandchildren though

Re: Diameter and thread for child seat anchor?

Just curious.. where is the anchor actually located? Behind the back seat?

Exactly what purpose does it serve?

My current child seat is forward facing and uses only the regular 3-point seatbelt to fasten seat and kid.

Can the anchor be used as an extra attachment mechanism to fasten the seat itself and if yes, how?

I'm very interested in backwards facing seats but the current ones use a pillar on their rear side, which is facing in the direction of travel (hopefully), which supports it from going forward if hard stop occurs. This pillar is angled in such a way that most of them cannot possibly fit into the SVX since the driver or passanger seats are in the way.

The SVX is generally very spacious but due to the angle of the pillar you cannot install this solution and still have legroom for driver or passanger.. if it's possible at all (I didn't check since both driver and passanger have legs in our family).

Behind the headrest for each back seat there is a rectangular panel in the speaker grille. When you pop it out, there is a place for the anchor to attach.

I have an anchor that I'm positive has been in the under-passenger-seat drawer from when the car was new until I got the car. My brother in law who gave me the car was shocked to learn that the drawer was there at all. But my anchor isn't up for grabs - I'm planning on having kids one day and I'm not planning of getting rid of the SVXes when I do.

Re: Diameter and thread for child seat anchor?

Holy crap, I completely forgot about that drawer. I wonder what sorts of things I'll find in mine! So far working on and driving my SVX has been like an archaeological dig. I've had it for more than a third of my life, so there are...things in there I'd long though I forgot, even though I kept it pretty clean.

You mean those condoms you put there when you were young and dated Betty Sue and didn't dare put it in the glove comp in case you got pulled over?

In the days of Isofix, is it too much to ask how the anchor as applied? As a principle, I mean.. what is the purpose of the achor? How does it increase safety?

There is a drawer under the passenger seat? Brb.

Edit: Fun fact for you. My '94 doesn't have a drawer but my '92 does.

A lot of times they go missing. Also, they were only originally equipped in LS-L/LSi models (perhaps 94 LS FWD but can't confirm).

Re: Diameter and thread for child seat anchor?

I have been unable to locate a top anchor for my car. My local dealer can't get one, and Subaruparts won't return my calls or emails. Honestly, I'm sort of done trying to reach them. I think it's been years since they returned a message from me, so I think it's about time I stop trying.

So I bought a drop-forged, shouldered machinery eyebolt from Fastenall. You're not supposed to pull on these eyebolts sideways the way I will be, but I am positive it's strong enough for this application. I may turn the eyebolt to prevent it from being pulled that way.
