I play trumpet, piano, drums, and guitar. Naturally those translate to some other instruments; baritone and coronet, synthesizers, bass guitars, etc. I'm an okay guitarist at best, and I've only recently picked up a drum set, but I've played the trumpet for most of my life. The piano however, is my favorite.

I can't sing to save my life, but as Ozzy would say, "I'm not a singer, I'm a vocalist." I can whine like Axl Rose, bellow like Neil Diamond, and sometimes do a bit of James Brown, but that's about it.

I always write sissy music, but I listen to the heavy stuff. Go figure.

Here goes...

Started piano lessons in 2nd grade. I was forced to take lessons for four years, after that, my mom said "do what you want". I quickly dropped lesson taking and started just playing for fun. I learned light years faster by playing modern music instead of classical (much easier to get motivated to practice when I actually want to hear the music i'm playing). After that I started branching out to other instruments (it's easy once you know piano). So i've been playing piano for almost 20 years, acoustic guitar for about 10, electric for about 6, drums for about 4 years. Also in fourth grade I started with trumpet, then branched out to trombone and the French horn. With those down, I can play any brass instrument fairly well. My mom taught me how to play sax, and as they say, once you master the reed, the rest is easy. So i guess really the only instruments I can't play are the ones played with a bow. I had a girlfriend once who was a very accomplished violin player...she tried to teach me, but I learned that my natural talent in the other instruments apparently did nothing to help with the bow, so I gave that up quickly (ears couldn't take it anymore).

I love writing my own music, though i'm no good with lyrics. Tons of songs, no words. Hmmmph.

Shadow248, I completely relate. Being force-fed classical music teaches you to hate music. Modern music just makes you want to play more. Reed instruments don't come naturally to anyone, but I think I'm particularly incompatible. I've been itching to learn some strings, but haven't had an opportunity yet. I've got tons of lyrics, and tons of songs. Very few go together. Hmmmph, indeed...

electric, not stand-up

i play bass, been playing for right around 10 years now. ive been in acouple different bands, was offered a contract to be a studio bassist (the guy that fills in for other bands' bassist's), was also voted as one of the top ten metal bassists in southern Tx. My current band should be recording a 6-track demo soon. We play alot of metalcore mixed with swedish metal (As I Lay Dying/In Flames) if any of you guys want a copy, i could probably get you one for about 5-6$ shipped.

I play guitar - Jackson Dinky Reverse with a Bill Lawrence L 500XL through a marshall 80 watt combo. Mostly heavy metal stuff but I like to play classical too. I started out in the 4th grade on a 3/4 scale Maya flying V, then a fender stratocaster, then the jackson.

I used to play in mass at church (catholic school) I brought the flying V the first time - it was black and white and looked like something the devil himself would wield. The priest about **** himself. They made me use my dad's acoustic guitars after that.

Music

Hi everyone, I played drums in High school and a year at IU. Spent three years in the Army. The 214th and the 423rd Army Bands. I jobed around Indianapolin,In. in the '60s. Went with a contingent from USARAL." United States Army Alaska"To the All Army Entertainment Contest at Ft. Belvour in Va. Didn't Win. It was fun whille it lasted. Haven't touched a drum stick or sticks in forty years. I think the music world is the better for it. Take care, BOBB
