Looking at getting a F250, advice
Well my Brat is taking a beating with work and now with the prospect of towing an SVX I guess it is time to start looking at getting a bigger truck. At least I'll be able to keep all my tools in it. Won't buy a Chevy as I'd have to look at the thing out front. Dodge trannies scare me esp. used ones. That leaves the F250. I'm not a fan of the new body styles but do kind of like the pre 97s. Anybody know what to look for as far as their bad points and typical issues? Looking at a couple with the 4.9 that Ford insists is a 5.0 so it sounded better to their Mustang buyers.

I don't know a great deal about pre 97 F250's but I have a couple of 'dumb' questions for you:
1) Are you looking at an auto or 5spd? 2) 2wd or 4wd? If it is a 4wd, beware of any F250 that had a snow plow attached to the front of it. You'll probably be able to pick up a truck like this for cheap, but that's for a reason - the drivetrain will be worn down and the engine weak from the excessive plowing. I watched my uncle-in-law inspect one the other day. He crawled under the truck and looked over the 4wd mechanism. Looked for any unusual ATF leaks and inspected the locking hubs on either side of the front axle. BTW, the shocks on those trucks tend to wear out with age. -Chike

Not bad trucks, you just need to watch out for.........
Broken springs rotted frames rotted spring shackels and mounts junk ball joints junk axle U-joints leaking powersteering pump leaking steering box junk tranny broken ignition switch Leaking and hoplessly rotted or cracked exaust manifolds. Other than that they are great trucks. Whats wrong with chevys?

Hey,
I have a '92 F250 4x4 with a 5 speed and a 460, it had 150,000 miles on it and I have put 10,000 of those on it, the only thing that has gone wrong in that time is the clutch went out last month. If you are going to use the truck like a truck then skip the 4.9/5.0 and go for a 351, much better torque and more drivable with a load. I have driven E350 vans with the 5.0 that cant get out of their own way, 351 pulls just about anything. Depending on the year you may need to stay away from the 4 speed autos as well, some of the earlier ones had the electronics in the box and died on a regular basis due to heat, the C6 3 speed auto is bulletproof, I had one in my old truck, and the 5 speed is awsome, in '95 it was upgraded to a stronger unit. Basically if you take care of these trucks they just don't break, except for the fuel pumps.

You have to remember I use my Brat like a truck. Hauling loads similar to that of the capacity of a 150. 2wd, 5 speed or auto is fine. The Toy truck is out as it doesn't offer a 3/4 ton so it doesn't meet guidlines for the tax breaks that make it doable in the first place.

seriously, any car has it's problems. i've not had one problem with mine and it has almost 80,000 miles on it. my b/f just bought a 2001 lariot, and she is a beaut but with only 21,000 who can tell how she is going to behave at 100,000. i wish you luck in your search. Kelli

Take care of any vehicle properly and it will last you a very long time. Especially a truck. So many times I see people who say "nobody can build a car to last these days!" but then I look at how they take care of their cars, and I can understand why they think that way. On the other hand, I see people with those exact same cars that seem to just run forever.

BTW, if you get a manual tranny, any of the big three will hold up just great...they tend to use the same ones.

There is a letter to the editor in the newest Car and Driver or Motor Trend that blasts the new ford pick-ups. Supposedly the redesign has a multitude of problems. Which seems to continue the crappy ford quality established by the focus and escape.

I would get a diesel if you are going to go for a *real* truck. It may cost a little bit more (the entire used truck market is high anyway) but it will be well worth it. The motor will outlast you.
If you get a 3/4 ton with a 5.0 I think you need to be slapped , cuz you are just silly. The 300 straight 6 has more torque....
