Exclamation I have a request for all of you.

Please.... take off work, skip class, whatever... but please go see "the Motorcycle Diaries". It's an incredible movie, and I'd have to say without a doubt it's the most beautiful touching movie I've ever seen. I might even go so far as to say it's the best movie I've ever seen, and I've seen quite a lot. It's the story of Ernesto 'Che' Guevara and his friend who take a cross country trip across south america on a beat up motorcycle. It's very moving, but it isn't one of those movies that makes you sad, or happy. It makes you THINK about things, and question if today's world is truly progress. In roughly 200 years, it seems that everyone in America has lost most of their past. I'm 25% german, 25% irish, 25% french, and a bit polish and a few other things.... yet I don't know any customs, music, food, or traditions from these countries. My past has been effectively erased and my future seems to undoubtedly be 'acquire more stuff', because here in America, we're trained to be consumers. I could go on, but I don't want to scare anybody off. This movie is truly incredible, and I strongly suggest that everyone see it, if possible.

In a way I think you make a valid point, but on the other side. What makes America strong is that we become American's first. I may be mostly of German decent, but I'm an American. If I went to Germany and called myself German they'd laugh at me. It's my biggest pet peeve with those of hispanic origin that continue to speak spanish and refuse to use English. My family didn't walk around speaking German or Italian to everyone and expect them to bend to their will. You learned English or you were left behind. They'd don't print ballots in French, German, Russian, Italian, Japanese, etc... It's only the hispanics, at least around here, that refuse to blend into to society instead of society accomidating them. I'm not a racist, but the rules should be for everyone. The eastern europeans around here haven't sued for Polish, Ukrainian, Romainian, etc... ballots like the hispanics did in Reading. The thing is, you have to be a US citizen to vote, you should be able to read and write the language.

Damn Straight!!!

My grandparents HAD to learn English if they wanted to work. You couldn't even be a farm hand if you didn't speak English. They learned English.

If we keep English as our official language, all official documents should be written in English only.

I am a pessimistic optimistic. I think the worst is going to happen, that way when it does, i don't feel as bad, but if the best happens, i am twice as happy.

If I move to Johannesburg would I be an American-African?

i haven't lost my past - i have a big gold Germany medallion that i wear on a big gold chain, and i usually have lederhosen on. i demand that all paperwork given to me be written in German, because i think that's my right. i listen to Rammstein and eat knockwurst. i gave most of my belongings away, because being a consumer is bad.

i'm a German-American, respect my decision to not bother to do things the way they are done in this country because the universe revolves around me.

(actually, the problem with America is that no one gives a **** about anyone else but themselves.)

We'd have to declare it as our official language before we keep it as our official language.

Wow. It's great that my post about an incredible movie can degrade into *****ing about minorities and what language they use, a few people who try to flirt with some girl thousands of miles away from them, and someone who thinks that I want everything in german.

Top notch.
