The true answer is: optical illusion,

try this:

next full moon ... get a dime (a euro is too big... ) as the moon is coming up at the horizon hold the dime out at full reach and cover the moon (it should just cover it) later when the moon is at or near the zenith cover the moon again. tell me what the result is...

Wouldn't this be dependant on the length of ones arms?

Could your arms be longer when horizontal as opposed to vertical due to the force of gravity?

Is gravity really a force or just a distortion in space/time?

ps How big is a dime?

The distance between you and the dime would be longer if your arm is oustretched horizontally than if it was outstretched vertically because of the relation of your head to your arm. Think about it. Your head would put your eyes closer in the vertical position because your eyes are at a raised position relative to your arm's pivot point to begin with. Therefore the reduced distance between your eyes and the dime would oh no i've gone cross-eyed.

Unless there is a abnormality in ones physic then the difference should be minimal... it's mostly to show scale.. (as that's what causes the optical illusion..

I think that it's mass that creates both gravity and the distortion in space/time

If I remember right .. a dime is just a little smaller than a 2 pence piece.. Not sure though, I haven’t been to the UK for 30 years...
Listen to mitch, the av guy, trying to sound like a scientist....ha ha ha....

Refraction of light, but does that not happen in all directions? Vertical and Horizontal.

Swelling up as it nears the ocean, but what if you live on the West Coast?

So many questions, so little time.

You all realize it isn't the the moon looks bigger on the horizon don't you, it's that it looks smaller when it's up high in the sky.

Even if you don't believe the rest of this, the above is true

I mean think about it. Ever seen a hot air balloon? Looks pretty big down near the ground doesn't it - but tiny when it gets up in the sky, yes?

Now a lot of people would try to tell you that's because it's farther away when it goes up. Don't believe them for a second....they let some air out of it when you weren't looking.

Or look at the Sun (with sunglasses). Do you really think it doesn't look big because it's 93 million miles away? Now who has a tape measure that long?

I'm still working on what they do to airplanes, but I think I'm close...I've been collaborating with the "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" people. I'll publish when I get the whole theory worked out.

Actually, one time, I saw this really tiny airliner flying above me and I tried to jump up and grab it...it saw me and turned away. But I swear I would have had it!

Remember Velocity hast to do with a given direction... almost all matter on earth will have a velocity... unless we are talking about Nuclear Physics... Then I'm not the man to talk to.. I disagree. You are right that the direction is important. Velocity is speed in a given direction and Acceleration is rate of change of Velocity.

When you are falling to the ground, the direction of your velocity is towards the centre of the earth. When you actually hit, the ground exerts a force which causes the negative acceleration.

From the time you hit, until the time you stop, you are still moving downwards, compressing the ground, so in relation to your velocity, the acceleration is negative. Even though it is positive in relation to the ground.

Phil.

Mitch, you gave it your best, it's just we're all nearly hopeless. Thank goodness there's somebody who's still willing to tilt at that windmill.

Actually, you are right about optical illusion, and the general physics concensus is it really is that it's smaller when up in the sky, not big at the horizon - although that might seem like "splitting hairs". It has to do with angle subtended by the eye, coupled with size references when near the horizon vice none when up higher.

Now I have to go back to my shrinking airplane theory. I've been talking to the rocket launch guys where I work and they say it's all too complicated to explain to me, but has something to do with shrinking as fuel is expended, kinda like an emptying bladder.
