Speaking of Fords my girlfriend is looking for a car for under $3k, and doesn't want something with 150k+ on it so she likes the Probe. I know they're a hunk of crap (since they are a Ford), but what else is in that price range?

P.S. Around you (well, us) Kelli people think that y'all is a word.

I think, to be fair, we should differentiate between "Modern" and "Pre-80's" Fords. I've told the story before about the 72 LTD that we bought from some friends for 300.00. Looked like crap, but ran like a dream. It had 145K on it when we bought it. We sold it a few years later for 100.00, and the only reason we did, was because, the price of replacing the donut gaskets was going to exceed the value of the car. The guy who bought it was going to remove the 351W and put it in a pick-up truck. Oh, and he was already aware that the engine had 356K+ miles on it.

Yes, the Escort, beginning in '91, was mostly Mazda. The Probe was a re-shaped MX-6. The Escort GT 1.8 liter was once on my short list of REALLY cheap, cheap thrills cars, as was the Colt/Mitsu GT turbo hatchback of the early '90s. Fortunately I came to my senses, & bought a Japanese luxury car that never breaks down.

My 3rd replacement Interceptor, this one a 2002 with 37k on it has just lost 2nd gear in the slushbox, had a cylinder go bad, and now is smoking like a 1988 Dodge Caravan, so I'm thinking head gasket as you can smell anti-freeze burning. ford, quality is job 1001.

Dan,

You must be using your Ford Interceptor to chase down guys like me who drive their SVXes at 80-85 mph on the northeast extesion of the PA. Turnpike, about 4-5 AM in the morning on the way to Syracuse.
I'm scheduled to monitor another equipment test up in Syracuse either late this week or early next week.

So look for a pearl colored '92 SVX with DE vanity plates that spell SVXY. An old, fat, bald guy will be driving. He bears a striking resemblance to me. The CD will be blasting Italian music (opera) either by the 3 tenors, or by Bocelli. The driver will be singing along too. So you can cite him for both, speeding and noise polution.

I get I-78 on occasion, but the NE Ext. is purely PSP. These cars just suck, plain and simple. No excuse for the way they shed trannies.

Kudos on the Northstar find. I stand corrected, and to my knowledge, this is the first use of the Northstar outside of Cadillac. I still stand by my FWD claim, just look anywhere, you'll find it. I too am a Pontiac fan as well, besides the Subies and my first two cars (Chevys, not fords), all my cars have been Pontiacs. 2 '84 T/As and 3 Grand Ams. I'd like to pick up an '84 MSE T/A someday. Also, all my predictions are car magazine rumors as well, but I'm sure one of ours will be true.

As much as I hate to admit it, I think I'd let you get away with pre-'70's. But '70's fords?! The Pinto, the Pinto based Mustang (Mustang II I believe it was), need I go on? This was the begining of ford's demise. But I don't think anyone involved with this thread can deny that cars like the pre-'70's Mustang and Thunderbird and such are true American classics. But don't get me wrong, those cars were distant memories long before I was born, and in my lifetime, fORDS SUCK!

I was always under the impression that it was the other way around, that the fords were underpinning the Mazdas. Oh well, it doesn't really matter, a Mazda without a rotary engine isn't realy a Mazda, is it? And a ford designed rotary Mazda, as evidenced by the hideous and underpowered RX-8, isn't really a Mazda either.

By the way, I must say, this is one of the most enjoyable threads I've been involved with. And my father would disown me if he knew what I've said. And one more thing: fORDS STILL SUCK!!!

My Dad owns a 1995 ford ranger (RWD) and by some act of god its never needed any major work. Dispite that, I my self hate ford. Not only do I dislike the design/quality of 90% of their cars/trucks, I just get bad vibes when ever I hear ford mentioned.
When my first car, a Volvo 87 240DL started ****ing up (break stuff) I decided I did not want to bother spending another $300-400 to fix something else. So I started looking for another car. I was focusing on imports like a Volvo 850 or a Mitsubishi Eclipse (before I knew of the SVX). A guy from a local import car repair shop suggested the ford probe for me when I asked about those other 2 cars. Instantly I just said, "but its a ford!!" He said its by Mazda and not ford. I said "if it says ford on it no thanks." Then later on I found about the SVX and got mine and love it.
I hope the government does something really nasty to ford for all these recalls.

Interesting bit o' logic here. Mazda MUST have rotary, RX-8 has rotary yet not a Mazda.

Another interesting bit o' logic here. You want an import, find a Mazda with Ford badges and dont buy it because of the badges?

Would you have bought a "Dodge" Stealth aka Mitsubishi 3000 GT?

Plenty of manufacturers have had massive recalls, foreign (Mitsubishi) and domestic.

The ford RX-8 is both hideous and underpowered, hence the hideous and underpowered comment. The original RX-7 was neither. Gee...thanks for ruining another car ford.

Just wait till ford gets done "fixing" Aston Martin, just like it did to Jaguar. It's a crime.
