350Z? Not impressed.

So i've been hearing all this talk on the boards about the new 350Z and such. I think it's a nice looking car but i don't know much about it.

So im on my way to mandi's tonight, in my GTP, and i see a 350Z coming up fast behind me. I know it's one of those "i've got the new 350Z so no one can catch me" people. So i decide to see what that car is really made of. Just before he gets to me, i floor it (at about 60). The GTP drops from 4th to 3rd, and we take off...he realizes quickly what i am doing so he does same. For about three seconds(from about 65 to 80 or so) he gains on me...then runs right next to me, at about 90 i start to pull ahead. He never recovered and gave up real soon after (which is good cause the GTP's limiter kicks in at 118 and im sure he can go faster than that).

So to sum it up, im dissapointed. Not that the GTP is a slacker in any aspect...but a brand new car like that should have been able to pull ahead in that situation. PLUS, mandi's SVX is faster than the GTP on the highway...im sure of that...so im sure that the X can take the 350Z...unless maybe this guy had something stuck under his gas pedal.

Also gotta kind of take into consideration that maybe the car was still in the break-in period. Perhaps the guy realized that taking the car up that high a speed wasn't the brightest idea.

A guy in a new orange-copper colored 350Z pulls up beside me at the light yesterday. He couldn't take his eyes of my SVX.

I've had two experiences with the new Z..

I drove one with about 300 miles on it. I ran it to the redline once in second gear.. it pulled nice and chewed up the curves, but i was happy to get back into my svx.

i encountered one on the highway in my svx and had a relatively similar experience to you-- held steady to 80.. by the time i was going 105, i was pulling ahead..

then again, i'm sure a broken-in nissan would be a better performer..

I'm sure that there will be plenty of performance parts available, both Nissan and aftermarket, to make the 350Z go, stop, & handle superbly. I just don't like the stylying. I wish that they had copied a Ferrari again, like they did with the 240Z, instead of copying an Audi TT. I find the lines too abrupt. To my eye the Z-car looks too heavy... sorta like me.

The new Z is one of the top 5 on my "For this much money, and for this much hype, they coulda made it look WAY better than this" list.

For the curious, the other 4 are the Audi TT, the Lexus SC, the WRX, and the Lancer Evo. Beauty's in the eye of the beholder, and to my eye, they aren't attractive cars at all.

(*&@$^!!!!.... why are you always so pessemistic about the SVX?! I wish you'd hurry up and sell yours so you'd quit complaining about it. It's people like you that keep the SVX from having an aftermarket.

You are ALWAYS complaining about how SLOW the SVX is, how it doesn't go fast enough, how it doesn't handle, how this suck and that sucks..... SELL IT! GET SOMETHING THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.

I know you two tend to get on each others' nerves, but can't we all just get along?

Really, the SVX does have a lot of trouble hanging with many cars that you would think it SHOULD be able to decimate. James just doesn't find it to be worth it to mod the SVX or consider it much of sports car. He is still a pretty friendly guy, though... just like you CAN be, Rob. I say we just keep trying to make the SVX faster and better handling... and if and when we are successful, James can say, "That wasn't worth it, but it's pretty cool." Would that be about your reaction James?

I think you let this stuff get to you too much, Rob. Remember that James still likes his SVX very much... just doesn't see it as a big performance competitor.
