Parts trivia
This part should be familiar to almost all of us who have been under the hood of the SVX, though it doesn't usually look this clean. What is it?

Lol...yea, I made it too easy. Should've just posted a pic of the paddle wheel instead.
Now that I have your attention Beav, I've got all the parts cleaned and have new seals and bearing, but I have a question about the washer that goes between the #9 oil seal and #8 bearing. Should I put some grease on it? Would plain old white lithium grease do or do I need some bearing grease? http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?mod...category=348-A KuoH |

You could put some ATF on it, that's what's going to be on it soon anyway. Just be sure to lube the seal up, that's the most important.

Yup, he got the bracket back on and it's running fine and I just got done with my PS pump rebuild. The good news is that everything is shiney and clean. The bad news is that I'll have to disassemble the reservoir again tomorrow. I forgot to tighten the four bolts that hold the two halves of the pump body together.

I dabbed my fingertip in ATF and pre-oiled the seal a bit. Should I have soaked the thing? As for the washer, since it's between the seal and the bearing, I wouldn't think it would get much ATF unless the seal goes bad. I put a bit of bearing grease on it just in case. It seems work OK so far, but I've gotten to tighten up those bolts some more.

No need to soak the seal, just a wipe of oil is sufficient. If there wasn't going to be any fluid on the washer you wouldn't need the seal.

Huh? I thought the point of the seal was to prevent the ATF from getting past it and soak the washer and bearing and basically let all the ATF leak out?

Oops, I was thinking bearing, washer then seal, from inside out. It pays to look closer at the pic. Is this where I say "My bad" ?

Hey Kuo,
I was thinking of rebuilding my PS pump some day. Instead I bought a new one last summer but I think I may get to rebuild the old one in about another 100K miles. How much did it run you for parts? About how long did it take you? Any special tools? Thanks John |

Total parts were only about $30. I ordered all the o-rings, bearing, seal, and gasket. Pretty much all the low dollar items other than nuts & bolts. It took me about 6 hours, but that was because I decided to clean everything, including the bracket. If you're going to do it, I would recommend also buying the PS hoses and new hose clamps. Mine was so brittle that it cracked a bit when I reinstalled it. Luckily, I had a piece left over from when I did the tranny filter and replaced it with that. The only special tool I needed was a strap wrench to get the pulley off. You might be able to come up with another method if you don't have one. It would be good to have help though, as that nut is on very tight.
