Dreaded gunk in oil filler cap
Hi guys, the dreaded milky deposit is showing in my oil filler cap. So I have water getting into my oil.
Three questions: 1. Is it possible to trace where it is getting in? 2. Will it do any harm if I leave an investigation until spring? It's pretty cold up here in Canada. I will only doing about 1000 kilometers. 3. Are any of the leak sealer products worth trying? Thanks. |

Re: Dreaded gunk in oil filler cap
if you do a lot of short trip driving it could just be condensation in the oil. i would change the oil and see if it come back. you could also buy a uv dye and put it in your coolant then check to see if the gunk glows under a black light.

Re: Dreaded gunk in oil filler cap
Usually a symptom of a head gasket, but not always What is the year and mileage of your car?
After getting the car up to operating temperature, shut it off and check the radiator overflow bottle. Sniff the coolant to check if it has an exhaust smell. How does the temperature act on your car? Head gaskets usually begin to fail with age, not mileage. .

Re: Dreaded gunk in oil filler cap
Take it for a good rip down the 417. Keep an eye on the engine temperature. If it's condensation from cold temps and short trips it should evaporate most of the milkiness.

Re: Dreaded gunk in oil filler cap
Pretty common in cold climate. Don't assume anything serious.

Re: Dreaded gunk in oil filler cap
Yeah I had the same thing last year, scared the crap out of me, I was primarily driving 2-4 mile trips in the winter. Thought I needed a head gasket till I talked to few people who clued me in.

Re: Dreaded gunk in oil filler cap
Whoo, I actually checked my oil cap recently and found milkiness and I nearly had a melt down. Was 1k over for an oil change anyway, put in fresh oil, topped up the coolant, car is running good.

Re: Dreaded gunk in oil filler cap
Hi Guys,
Thanks for your input. I do have mainly short trips, so that could be the problem. I have a 92 Pearlie with 197K (122k miles) on it. I don't usually use it in winter, but I just bought a Mercedes E 500 with 65k on it and decided to keep the more valuable car away from the salt. I will clean the cap and take a longer drive and see what happens. Thanks again. |
