I think my car has 4 1/2 gears.....

I had noticed it before but I thought maybe it was just me letting off the pedal a little bit but today I tested it...

I had the car in 3 accelerated to 50 and held it there. It was reving at about 2500 rpm. I put it in drive then the rpms dropped to about 2000 then 4 or 5 seconds later it dropped again to 1750 rpms....is this normal?

When the torque converter locks up the RPM will drop additionally, but only when the transmission temps have reached 150 degrees or higher. You will probably notice the behavior you've described will not occur until your car is fully warmed up.

Mine turns 1500@50 mph so you're pretty much dead on. I usually putt around town in 3 and once I get where there are few if any lights, stop signs etc then I go to D and usually it takes a second or so before the TC locks so it sounds like your car is fine. This car will provide you with plenty of opportunity to hone your mechanics skills. If it ain't broke,....you know the rest.

Theyre sophisticated technologically but still simple enough to work on yourself
