Re: pics of the security module

out of ALL the posts, from those with a solid red light, none of the posts updates whether unplugging the unit from harness for several days has worked to get it back to programming mode.

They all hint "it might work if you unplug for some time" but then nobody posts any updates. I guess I will be the person to find out.

I appreciate the help, but really still nobody has gone the extra mile on this. There are people asking, if the door has to be closed, of how many hours you have to tap at the switch.

I have tried to reset mine. I left the battery disconnected overnight. It didn't work.

Re: pics of the security module

i havent had a chance to get it back in yet. been out now for what, 3 weeks. will post my findings, plan to hook it back up wednesday when it warms up. been too busy.

also, i came across a different procedure about the newer modules about turning key on/off 2 times then to rapidly press.

wish me lucks.

Re: pics of the security module

Are you driving the car with no module in it? I did that... bad idea. When it got dark, I had NO interior lights, my rear wiper didnt work, and neither did the defrost. Stupid things happen if you leave that unhooked, lol. Oh and by the way... I have 3 modules left from when I was trying to fix mine. They should all work.... 2 of them are out of a 92, the other is out of an early 94LE with auto belts, and no passenger airbag. Meaning its still up under the dash.

That's odd that your car had that behavior with the module removed. Some cars simply don't have the module (L model etc). I've had several svx's with the module removed and no issues. Perhaps you had another issue?

Would you be interested in selling one? I have a 92 that needs one.

Re: pics of the security module

update. hooked the module back up, been disconnected around 6 weeks. still a solid light, won't enter programming mode.

I still have not ruled out switch, but since the light no blinking, just solid or not lit depending on switch position, I am diagnosing as bad module.

more to come.

Re: pics of the security module

Here is the information from the service manual on the security system, maybe this can go in the how-to section???

Also from looking at the diagram, the antenna for the remote is part of the rear defroster grid, and looks like the dome light and a few other things are connected to the security module. Non security equipped cars probably have some sort of bypass connector plugged in where the security module would otherwise be...

The module has its own antenna (a wire dangling out from one side). Despite the wiring diagram, it doesn't use the rear defroster. Perhaps Subaru originally intended to, but they never did. The car's 17-pin harness has no pin/wire at that position, and the module I've seen close up had no circuit connected to that pin either.

The module doesn't connect to the dome lights (directly at least). It connects to both of the door switches, which eventually connect to the timer module for the dome lights (as well as the module for the passive seatbelts in 92-93). As far as the security module is concerned, it's looking for the door inputs to be grounded whenever the doors are opened. When you unlock the doors from the remote, the security module does connect the driver's door wire to ground briefly, to fire off the dome light timer (and turn on the dome lights).

On cars without the security system, there's no bypass plug connected to the 17-pin harness. There is a bypass plug in place of the starter interrupt relay.

I'd still love to do an autopsy on a dead module to see if there's something blowing that's easily fixable. It has a bunch of CMOS ICs (which don't like static electricity at all).

Re: pics of the security module

I scored one on ebay. if it works upon arriving, i could give up my dead one as i too would like the fix. This one is coming from a 95 car, so it should be revised and work whereas the 92 all were fail.

That would be interesting, especially if what fries is some off-the-shelf or otherwise readily available component...

As for the antenna, part of the rear defroster grid is the secondary antenna for the FM radio, and I think I was confusing that with the keyless entry antenna...

I've never had my module out or even looked at it, but I do have a newer security module in my tool box at work that I'm tempted to bring home and see if I can figure out a way to wire it in to an SVX, since it has a siren output, plus the remotes are like $25 instead of $40... I just have to dig out the wiring diagram/installation guide for it.

You're not imagining things. Page 2 of that PDF shows pin 7 tied directly to the rear defroster.

The FM antenna is actually a separate foil on the rear glass.

It's not very difficult. See PhatWeasel's thread. Let me know when you do and I can send some pointers.
