'68 Camaro - total from the ground up build -- no power steering, no power brakes, no AC....350 four bolt mains (out of a van!) with all the performance trimings + manual trans + plus handbuilt exhaust + custom suspension....yeah, college years and disposable income...seems like such a long time ago (oh, yeah....it was)

Hmmmm....The Taurus has shown the fastest confirmed speed of my gang, although I'm sure the SVX would whoop it if I had a place to test it out safely. (Can't wait for February, driving school+performance winter driving school(Ice racing!!!))

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX Classic SVX
I have owned many Corvettes and others during my prime in period referred to as the "muscle car" era. The two quickest ones are very close in performance, but different in many ways

The second fastest one was a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. It had a 440 V8 engine producing 375hp at around 4500rpm and 480 lb-ft of torque at a very usable 3200 rpm.

It would do 0-60 in a little over 6.5 secs and ran the quarter in about 14 sec @ 103 mph. It was quite a bit heavier, due to the extended nose and large wing, but a lot of fun for the $4000.00 sticker at the time. Brakes and handling were not that impressive though.

I brought it across the country from California in 1971 to Ellicott City, Maryland, only to find out that I couldn't get it registered legally because it did not have a real front bumper. One had to be fabricated from a modified 1963 Corvette bumper and installed before it was registered.

And then there was the great flood in Ellicott City in 1972...final score:

Patapsco River: 1
Dodge Charger: 0

But my all-time vote for the fastest car in my history was a beautiful Marina Blue 1966 Chevelle SS396.

The car had the L78 396 V8, producing 375hp @ 5600rpm and 415lb-ft of torque @3600rpm. Engine had solid lifters, 11.0:1 compression, 427 large-valve heads and a 800cfm Holley, connected to a Muncie close-ratio 4-speed tranny. This little puppy did 0-60 in 6.0 sec. and the quarter in 14.40 sec @ 100mph.

It was faster off the line, but slower in the quarter than the Daytona, but because it was much lighter, the car seemed so much quicker in overall acceleration and more exciting to drive. Maybe because the Daytona had the 727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic. Again handling and braking was barely adequate in the SS, compared to what I drive today.

The fastest car I've owned is my '85 Corvette.

The fastest car I've driven is my friend's STi.

The fastest car I've ridden in is a Z06.

But my Impreza 2.5 RS is still my favorite car.

Dontcha mean three speed? Can't say I've ever seen anything from the 60s that had a four speed auto..... And river or not, imagine what that thing'd be worth today... it's enough to make a grown man cry lol

Well...

The SVX has to be "Fastest" I have been able to drive. I own a 68 Mustang with a 302 that I can't drive because the transmission is well, like an 92' SVX's after 10 years

I'm thinking the svx is the fastest car I've ever owned. My first thoughts were that my 72 Datsun 240Z might have been the fastest car I had ever owned but when I look at the listed 151 HP and 146 pounds of torque she kicked out together with the 0-60 time of eight seconds, I think the SVX would be the quicker of the two. It is certainly faster than the K car, the Aerostar and 6cyclinder Taurus I've had since... lol.

Seeing how I havent owned my 92 Ebony long enough to know what its top speed will be(yet), right now the fastest I've owned would be my 68 T-Bird.
Had the 429 Thunder-Jet engine in it. Scary over 100mph, but the thing weighed a couple tons, so it never seemd really unstable.
Its hard to say which one was the quickest tho. Back in the 60's when I was younger and the muscle cars were the rage, I was in alot of hot cars that almost made me......well you know
GTO's
Chevelles
Mustangs
Vettes
I had a friends brother that had a 17ft flat bottom race boat with a 427 rat engine in it. He raced it at Sundance in Nev/Cal back in the mid 70's. That thing scared the crap out of me bad once. I almost came out of the passenger seat at over 100mph

John:

What is really interesting is that the vaunted muscle cars of the late 60's are middle of the pack these days. The stock '65 GTO Tri-power with 360 hp had a tested quarter mile of only a little less than 15 secs, and a 0-60 just over 6 secs. Your numbers for the 396 Chevelle and the Dodge are only a little bit faster. Young Tom's quarter in his ebony at 14.5 sec's puts him right up there. The 14.9 he did in my car (claimed he didn't want to abuse it) puts it right in there with the GTO. Current day custom muscle cars, (Mustangs with with 500 hp crate engines and/or nitrous) with their 11+ sec quarters, are in a different universe from the '60's cars.

Of equal interest to me is "fastest on a road course." The SVX is pretty good, but not great. The Panoz I drove at racing school, with R-Compounds obviously was better. The GT3 I rode in at Summit Point, also with R-comps was phenomenal. Lateral acceleration to the point that holding your head straight was more than difficult. After a couple of laps, I found myself tilting my head and wedging it against the roll cage just above the passenger door. That way, I had support on left turns, and my head was tilted enough to mitigate the side forces on the right turns.

As for top speed, I do know my SVX is happy and stable at 125. It probably still had some left at that point. I was at about 6500rpm in 4th. The fastest I've ever driven has to be the Panoz at 135 mph.

although i do agree with you that the majority of old school muscle cars werent that fast in reality, I remember reading an article some time back online that cars like 72 chevelle SS 454 and a few other select cars had the capability to run low 13's to high 12s stock on good drag radials or slicks....most of their poor acceleration numbers were due to bad rubber and tons of down low torque.

fastest I have ever owned lets see 70 ford ltd wagon weighed a alot but came with a police interceptor 550 after tearing it down balance and blue print it, new rods, pistons , cams and 2 4barrel holley carbs I was clocked @ 166 on a major highway. unfortunitly that also became the slowest car as it was impounded and I had only left and right (feet) to go anywhere

I hated this car and the engine only lasted a couple months, but for cornering with 275/40ZR17 on all 4s with the stock suspension i felt like i was in Knight Rider on fast forward. wish i had kept it and been the first one to do a V8 conversion. It did look like a miniviper too.

My 92 GT was a low 12 sec. car, and the cobra a high 12 sec. to low 13 sec. car. Yes I was a gear head from 1992 to 2003, 5.0 mustangs was all I thought about. Subarus were just winter beaters, then I got the SVX bug and Im here to stay. I suppose one day I could own another stang, but the SVX has captured my heart.

Dan

My fastest car was a VAN. 66 Dodge A-100. ( former telephone truck)

I, shall we say, RADICALLY modified it. 155 mph, all day long if you wanted.
I sold it after a really wild weekend, never to own one again.

Yea, that was the idea.
Since then, I radically modified another 66 A-100, but it's not that fast. It is more geared to 'Quick'. 413 Chrysler, Hemi clutchpack 727, GM 12 bolt rear w/3:56 gears, M-50, 15 rear tires, big tube Hookers, Crane cam, windage tray, Holly 'tricky kit' in the carb, advance curve kit in dist, TRW Clevite bearings, Chrome molly rings, high volume oil pump that produces 90 psi, ( due to the new and improved pressure spring) I have to check the oil filter to make sure it doesn't push the tin cover off and let the oil escape.

It isn't all that fast, but will carry the front wheels about 50 ft from a 20 MPH roll.

It will be reborn as a truck-pull specimin, since it hooks too hard for the blacktop and has a tendency to spray parts all over the blacktop.

Making about 475 ponys on pump gas and trying to put them ALL on the ground. Might have to 'boost' it to play in the dirt.
