Troy,
I've been laid off quite a few times in my career. The first time is the hardest. Chin up. You have to realize that you are a person. "You are not your job or what you do." I know it's difficult, but you have to realize that your company has made the decision that you are no longer an integral cog in their plans. So, you have to look out for yourself now. What you do or what you don't do doesn't matter to them now. Put yourself as number 1. Get your resume up to snuff. You company has facilities such as phones. computers, fax machines, copiers, etc. Put these things to good use in your interest. You wont have these things after June. Get your personal finances in shape and cut down on your frivilous expenses. Sit down and come up with a plan to get interviews and and to impress the interviewers (what makes you a better choice than the 50-100 other guys he just interviwed for the same position). Your state unemployment office is a good source of booklets on how to present yourself and on possible leads. Finally, don't get down on yourself, if you are out of work for a long time. Have fun every once in awhile. You will get through this. Good Luck.

Troy,
So sorry for your situation! It has been said many times in past posts, but I can not think of any of my friends that were laid off in the recent "downsizing" of dotcom companies that did not land on their feet and come out better than before, job wise. It is, in fact, an opportunity. That one job is out there, and with what I perceive as your positive attitude, you will find it. And although it will be difficult at time to remain positive, you will really need to do so. Good luck, and know that this is fate, and something better is just over the hill. Harry

Troy, I'm sorry to hear about your situation, but as others have pointed out, this is an opportunity for you to make some major shifts and come out ahead.
When I got laid off 3 years ago (escorted out the door that same day, with 2 weeks' pay as severance), my first thought was "Great!!! I never have to come back here!" followed by "Jesus, how am I going to pay the bills?" I did something I never thought I'd have to do - filed for unemployment - and called everyone I knew who might be able to help me. I'd worked with a few personnel firms getting contract workers for my old company, so I contacted those guys and let them know I was available. Through a contact I'd made when I had a small coffee business, I also got a part-time gig making espresso at conventions, which was a little extra income but not enough to affect my unemployment benefits. I think the benefit was more psychological than real - having SOMETHING to do other than fill out job apps and mail resumes was very good for my state of mind. I was unemployed for almost 8 months, and finally got a job working for the greatest people I've ever worked with. The most amazing part was that my life didn't change for the worst while I was unemployed - things were a little different because of the reduced income, but not at all unbearable. My wife was extremely supportive throughout all this, which also helped me a lot. I didn't get any real help from all the people I contacted when I first got laid off, but I do think that the mere act of calling them helped me get moving and stay moving until I found a job. As LarryIII said, take this time to build up some momentum - polish the old resume, make copies, do online job searches, call anyone outside the company that you've worked with and may be helpful. More jobs come about through referrals and networking than through want ads. I believe there's no such thing as wasted effort in a job search, it all counts (I could put in some new-agey stuff about energy going out into the universe and creating desired effects, but I'll spare you). Stay positive, stay open to what comes to you, and do your best. Don't be afraid to brag about yourself and your accomplishments (but don't go overboard). You and your family will be in my thoughts.
