Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

2 weeks ago, I picked up the set of 4 Michelin X-Ice used on craigs, size is 215/60/16
According to my miata tire calc, they are going to be about ~3% taller

this past weekend, I picked up the set of 4 above RX-7 rims.

Ordered set of bulge acorn lugnuts but they won't be here til this weekend.

Took ONE wheel and tire to a service station monday, and the service guy mounted up the one.

Will have to test fit when the lugnuts get here. BTW, these Michelins, must be a little oversized from what Miata tire calc says. will jsut have to see.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

been noticing more cold noise on a cold morning.
pretty sure its my power steering pump bearings.

This AM was -3F outside, in the garage it got to 8F
Windchills are -15 to -30

Tonight the low is supposed to get to -13F actual

I am not sure how much longer the PS pump will go, I only have 2 more days I have to drive this until it can set until whenever Spring gets here. My job change title, means no more 72mile roundtrip days, which was just for this week…

Hope it can go 2 more cold days….without tearing apart.

What is the rebuild situation on these pumps? is there a master kit of seals? etc.
just going to rebuild it, not worth trying a used one.

It sounds like it will be 5.2% harder on your transmission.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

actually, the 97 which mine is, stock size is not like the 92-96 on a 97 stock size is

215/55/16 -1997 stock size

whereas a 1992 the stock size is 225/50/16

so going to 215/60/16 is according to Miata Calc

215/55-16 4.7in 12.7in 25.3in 79.5in 797 0.0%
215/60-16 5.1in 13.1in 26.2in 82.2in 771 3.3%

just trying to make the point, the 97 had its own stock size… as seen here on my VIN plate pic:

so my original Diameter is 25.3, going to a 26.2

anyhow here is the lugs just got, and a wheels pic, and a mounted tire pic, not installed yet…too cold out 11F now

a little luck, this will all work out. also still waiting on the centering rings, even though they are not really needed..

my poor SVX from FL, saw actual temp this morning on my drive in to work, of -5F on the climate control panel outside temp select….

and a taller tire will give better MPG right

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

I did not know that yours was a 97, with all of the transmission upgrades from the factory.
But in my defense, most of the SVXi on the road today are pre 97s.
I was trying to help.
I have seen 4EATs go out the day after too tall tires were installed.
If a person had a manual transmission or steeper gears in their SVX they would have a greater margin of error.

Always a good idea!
There are many cultures around the world that attribute emotion and feelings to inanimate objects, like swords, rocks, crystals, (my exwife) so something as animated as an SVX would most likley appreciate kind word and encouragement!

What?! Too soon?!

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

update:
No go the Michelin X-Ice 215/60/16 on a RX-7 rim, will not work.

Original 97 tire is 215/55/16, and it is SO SO SO close to the front lower strut perch….well

add another 3.2%, and nope.

It actually did clear the strut lower, but, and a BIG BUT, it was only "credit card" clearance….that was with the wheel stationary.
so at speed on the Interstate, it would have elongated, and likely rubbed, not worth the risk

side note. These 215/60/16 are the same stock size as a Honda CR-V, first gen. And the Rx- 5x114.3 is same bolt pattern, so these wheels, and the tires, may find their way on a 99-01 CR-V if I can find one at auction worth saving.

lol my bid on a 99 or so CR-v this day was a losing bid. I want a 5spd, in white, but may have to go for auto if i plan to only have the thing for short term hard to sell a 5spd older car. reallyhard. alll people want is autos autocrap autotragic. I myself want the extra 5mpg I can get with a 5spd. but the later on selling may keep me away from that.

anyhow. the PS puked up a big spot on my garage floor. need orings and first guess, maybe hoses. maybe PS pump rebuild. I have to put 2k miles on this car in the next 2 weeks, will she do it. 200 miles per day RT for 10 days soon……..oh boy joy.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

cold Xwives lol
-never went there alway dumped them when they got attached to that point…

last night 77miles north of me they had official -24F actual in Waterloo Iowa

When i backed the SVX out of the garage this AM, it went from 2F to -5F just backing out the door. I let the car warm up for 6 minutes to drive to my first work location, 2 blocks away. It showed -5 by the time I got to end of driveway, -6F after half block. then -8F next block, then I parked it, and went to my work. Forgot the camera. But it was cold as freak. or the X-wives…when they get that cold, might as well buy a dog to keep your bed warm

Supposedly we hit -14F here last night, and that jives with my all weather wall thermosensor.

tonight will go to -10F at 9pm right as i type, it is -5F
