If you had a 400HP engine........

What would your transmission options be? Could you have LAN rebuild the stock tranny and use his latest TCU code or would that still not be good enough to handle the HP? What realistic options exist that could handle the HP? I'm talking about options that wouldn't require massive modifications to get the tranny to fit and mount.

Re: If you had a 400HP engine........

Is a manual conversion considered too large a modification? A early 2007 6MT would be my choice for that kind of power level.

Re: If you had a 400HP engine........

The problem with the auto's under that much power seems to be that the front diffs tend to fail before anything else. The fully built trans can handle it, and the diff handles it for awhile, but over time, the stress, especially if the car is being used at the strip, takes it's toll. A built auto with a higher geared final drive would make a big difference since there are less teeth on the pinion gear which means each tooth is thicker, meaning it can withstand more torque, stress, etc. (4.44)

Other than that, the best option really seems to be a 6 spd. After all, the Shadow Machine has held up over quite awhile now in all different circumstances, and has never been treated "nicely"

6-speed. I have seen the gears, they're massive.

Whoa... In December, January and February, the transaxle doesn't see any sort of <unnatural stress> at all.

Once the weather breaks, though, may God have mercy on its soul...

Re: If you had a 400HP engine........

My plan with the LGT are to take a RS 5 mt tranny and tear it down and build it. A lot less to have to swap for a 6 speed conversion and will handle over 500 hp! I might have that with a turbo build down the road.

Re: If you had a 400HP engine........

build automatic for dragracing/daily driving, 07-09 Spec-B 6spd for mixed normal driving/light track days, STi 6spd with DCCD for more hard core stuff.

The STi 6spd preference will also depend on car setup and desired use.

04 has very agressive front LSD, 34/66 split (dyno says its really more like 20/80 before center diff lock up)
05 has a more sane front diff, same 34/66 split, but oem DCCD auto mode is better.
06 gets a 41/59 split.
07 gets new better ratio pattern and torsen rear LSD.

If you like the Spec B's tall ratios, the JDM forester XT uses them also, but has a front limited slip unlike our SpecB. Dunno about their legacy. Oh and the 2010+ legacy 6pd is based on the old 5spd, but past that I know little.

I don't know. How many hours of labor is required for that versus, say, one of the easier automatic swaps like the 4.44?

I should have also asked what the final drive ratios are for these various options..........

You will see where I am going with this soon. I want to gather information and then I will post some calculations.

If you're going to spend a ton of time/effort on the engine, use the right transmission for the job.

440 hp is pretty easy in an evo, with minor bolt ons

transmision solid as a rock=>

keep ths svx clean and original, and leave the performance factor to another car,
