New to things
I am new to the svx. I bought it about two weeks ago. It is a 92 LSL with 73000 miles. I don't know if it has a new tranny but I highly doubt it. I haven't noticed any problems with it b ut the shifting seems slow. Natural? Or should I start saving money? I also heard not to use full synthetic oil on boxers because it makes everything so slick you can drop a piston.
Any response is appreciated. Crash. |

Crash - welcome to the network.
Haven't heard that one about synthetic oil and boxer engines. If regular oil has been used in the past and you change to synthetic, gaskets may leak. This doesn't always happen, but it is possible. One of the first things you should do is get a tranny filter cooler installed if it doesn't have these now. This will help extend the life of the tranny. Visit this site often, and learn a wealth of information about this wonderful car. Good luck.

Crash,
Welcome to the SVX family. I am using Mobil 1 in all my cars. I started it with the '97 SVX from it's first oil change. There have been no ill effects. The biggest problem in any machine is friction. The easier you can make surfaces slide against each other the better off the machine will be. Friction robs useful power and turns it into heat. I wish cars had air or magnetic bearings in all their machinery. Unfortunately, these type of bearings presently cost more than most cars. I am a mechanical engineerwho has about 34 years experience with industrial plant machinery. I also use synthetic ATF in all our SVXes and am slowly converting the diffy lube oil to synthetic too. I hope your SVX brings you as much sheer joy as ours have.

Welcome crash
The shifting is slowed by a little resitor next to the battery. You can unplug it to speed up shifting with the following side effects 1. semi-harsh shifts, 2. power light blinks on startup and returns a solenoid a error code, 3. the tranny will drop rpms and hunt for gears if you put the car in 3rd. My tranny failed in January, I have a 92 with 85k on it now. My first (and pretty much only) sign of failure was that the car wouldn't roll in D unless you pushed the gas, then one day it just wouldn't go in 1st gear. I don't think the synthetic oil would have any ill effects besides possible leakage.
