Windshield Damage
Hello,
There is a "bullet-hole" in my SVX windshield, most likely from a flying rock on the highway. There are eight small cracks radiating out from the indentation. All together, the damage is the size of a quarter. Will this sort of damage get bigger? I've seen cracks slowly spread across windshields over time, but what about these "spider-web" cracks? G |

Put clear fingernail polish in the bullethole right away... it will keep the cracks from spreading. Make sure you work it gently into the cracks....

What about cold?
Hello,
Nail polish and/or a repair kit will prevent the cracks from spreading? Forever or temporarily? Now, there was another story of how a few days in intense California heat caused a windshield crack to spread from end to end. What about extreme cold, like this past winter in New England, where we got below freezing every night? That would cause contraction and therefore cracks, would it not? Perhaps I have little to worry, since the damage was caused last August and passed through the winter to the present without expanding. Another Question is, when I try to register the car, will the inspectors give me heck over a quarter-sized crack in the windshield and demand I get it replaced? G |

They'll give you a hard time, and it's understandable why they do so...
Think about it this way... in an accident the safety glass is designed to break into "pebbles" of glass instead of shards. If you already have cracks developing, the glass is likely to turn into shards, or long daggers of glass in those areas rather than the designed pebbles. Those shards don't feel nice when they puncture your abdomen when that Ford Explosion swerves in front of you and forces you into the guardrail. Personally, I would get the windshield replaced. Many states force your insurance company to replace the windshield with no deductible regardless of your level of coverage. That would be nice considering the $$$ involved in the SVX windshield. Good luck! |
