tranny Q
Well ive got a toasted tranny, no doubts about that but it makes an awful racket in first gear and reverse. Is it normal to have a shot tranny making alot of noise or am in more trouble then i thought? It sounds like stuff rattling around.

Well that does not sound good. I haven't had an SVX tranny go bad so I am not sure what it sounds like. 'Rattling noises" could mean a broken gear as opposed to scrapping and shreading noises of clutches. It might be a good idea not to drive it unless you go for a SOA rebuild that would include all the gears at no extra charge.

so you mean pay 3 grand at the scooby dealer instead of 2650 at the tranny place?

Yeah. Check it out as SOA includes all the planetary gears, Torque converter and front differential. Most rebuilders will charge you extra for that and it will be a 2 yr warrantee from SOA.

Buy a better tranny!
Phil, why not price a second hand Alcoyne box from Japan.
A late model after 94. It has the 40%front/60%rear AWD split. Instead of 90%front/10%rear. Makes it a rear wheel drive with front assist. No oversteer! May workout cheaper and better, especially if you are going to give it the big stick Just a thought. Harvey.

hmmmm
I wouldnt have the first clue how to go about this....i have a decent chunk of change sitting around, could you help em out? Who should i contact/where to get one?
Also if i decide to go with an SOA tranny, will i not recieve my core charge for having eaten gears. First gear runs strong(but noisy) and reverse is fine too. phil teal 92

Phil,
Harvey is talking about a SOA auto tranny. He is suggesting that you use a tranny sold to the rest of the world and not the USA. They have a different tranny. Harvey, If this change is made...... Does the TCU have to change and will the FWD light on the dash replace the 4WD light function?????? John PS I think the rest of the world has a better tranny. Check out Harveys locker. |

stupid questions...
will this tranny work without having to make any modifications (mechanically or electrically) to our cars? and how can one in the usa go about getting his or her hands on one?? i'd much rather have the power ratio split with favoritism towards the rear wheels. thanks!

after getting above 20MPH or so. Turns out it the front u-joint in the driveshaft was bad causing the shaft to bind and slap the heat shield. Installed a different shaft last sunday and no more clattering. |

Where do yeh get it???
Phil, I don't know who you would go to over there. In Australia, We have people who import second hand auto parts from Japan. Engines gearbox, brakes, the whole front of a car, back to the front pillars. Good value as they are usually around 70/80km, 50k miles.
There may be somebody in the States that does the same. I don't like dobbing in PaddelsNZ, but he may be able to check on the availability of them over in Jap. John, the US TCU would work it ok, with the exception of the fuse. As you know the fuse, in the US model, turns off the clutch pressure. Were as the ROTW box, it applies full pressure to the clutch. Whether this is a problem or not remains to be seen. It could be over come by adding a switch to turn off the "C" Solenoid for dyno work. The Jap TCU would work ok but has the 110MPH speed limiter built in. Aust, English or Europe TCU's could be hard to find. It would be easy to get a TCU from a later year model Legacy with this type of AWD. It may also have a better shift action than the long smoooooth action of the SVX. May be someone could check if the latest Legacy or Impressa models in the States have this type of transmission. If the fuse says FWD it hasn't, if it says Diff Lock, it has the 40/60 split transmission and would be a good TCU to use with the Aylcone box. As far as fitting the box, the only thing that I can see that may be different is the length of the box. The rear housing could be longer to fit the different AWD unit, so the tail shaft could be shorter. Food for thought Harvey.

Re: Buy a better tranny!
My understanding is that the Japanese trannys won't bolt up to the US car. That's why the engine and trans importers don't bring in the svx trans. I spoke to someone in Calif who tried to "make it fit" and couldn't. That's not to say that it can't be done, just that it isn't easy.

ya...
the car makes the rattling sound in nuetral as well, but it does somewhat sound like somthing hitting something else. I think its completely shot. I dont know about this tranny thing, i think i need to just take it over and get it checkout, then get it towed home. Would a broken drive shaft keep it from shifting into second gear or making alot of noise in neutral? Using my general knowledge im thinking no , but you more technical guys can probably tell me

Hmm...
Does anyone else think it strange that a "blown tranny" makes such noise when in neutral? I was thinking flex plate if it varies with engine RPM.
