Brilliant Phil!

I presume from the pictures you have modified my TCU and your jdm ECU? You have modified mine so it gets Power mode instead of Econ? Sounds good. I'll be looking forward to getting it back.

Then you have modified a jdm ECU to remove the speed limiter? It gets better and better.

Trevor is right, I'll have to propose you for an STI badge. This is above and beyond.

I'd get you the one Trevor sent back only it might make you cantankerous.

WOW!!!!! JUST WOW. This is amazing progress! You actually successfully ran modified code in both the TCU and ECU!!! That's just astounding!!! Excellent work, Phil. Excellent work.

I have to rebuild my adapter (it came apart when I was moving things out of the car to clean it), but when I do I'll test the new version of your program.

I modified your TCU and my ECU. I'm going to modify my TCU too, but I need to get another 28-pin socket from somewhere.

Once I fix the bug in the TCU software I'll send it back for you to test on your car.

Thanks. There's still a few issues with the software. I added some extra gauges, but I'm not sure that I got the conversion factors correct so the numbers may be off.

What more do you guys need in order to start doing some tuning?

This is the process as I see it:

1. Build a select monitor adapter. But don't follow my old howto. The best way is to buy a usb to ttl cable and add the "92 problem" upgrade board. I'm sure Nomake will explain how to do it once he gets his working again.

2. Download your ecu rom through the select monitor adapter - or skip steps 1 and 2 and just take a ROM from the collection on my website.

3. Build an ecu memory board. I have enough parts to make two more, once I've fully tested the first one. I'll put those two up for sale when I figure out how much they cost me. They are VERY easy to make. Just order the printed circuit board from expresspcb and the parts from Calum and spend half hour soldering.

4. Buy an eprom programmer.

5. Load the ecu rom file into RomRaider (formerly enginuity) and mess with the afr ratio map, base timing map, advance map and rev limiter. I probably need to go back and do some more work on the enginuity definition file I created.

6. Program your modified rom, put it into the memory board and test it out on your car. Go back to step 5 and repeat until happy.

7. Post your modified rom file on the net for others to try.

This one seems to be the favourite amongst non-geeks

I use these two instead:

http://www.centos.org/
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

This project really needs a good windows or java programmer to create some cool software.

Thnx Phil, I know we need a good programmer and that was the last thing I was waiting on the last time we went down this road... I am still waiting to hear back about a dyno shop that can tune the ECU through all of this

I fixed the bug in the TCU, but I'm not really sure what was wrong:

Testing with my tcuscan program revealed that the mode switching was working as intended, but for some reason the power light was stuck on whichever mode the TCU was in.

I made a dump of the TCU rom through the select monitor interface and verified that it was the same as the file I had written to the eprom. Then I reloaded the eprom with the original unmodified UK image and it worked properly. That proves there is no hardware issue.

I made two changes and one or both of them together evidently fixed the problem.

Firstly, the eprom is 64K, but the TCU only uses the last 16K of that. If you envisage the chip as four 16K blocks, then it looks like "blank, blank, blank, data". But when you read it through the select monitor it reads as "blank, blank, data, data", even on a factory TCU. This suggests to me that the A14 address line, that selects between blocks 3 and 4 is not connected, so you always get block4 when you ask for block3 or block4. Straightforward enough. Just as an experiment, I copied the data into all 4 blocks, this shouldn't really make a different because the TCU only looks at block 4.

The other thing I did is to set the checksum correctly. I didn't think it mattered because the self-test routine seems to be dead code. AFAICT it is never executed. Even if it was executed, it doesn't seem to do anything different whether the checksum is correct or incorrect. Either that or there is something screwy with my disassembler.

Anyway, two changes that shouldn't logically have made any difference seem to have made the problem go away. It is now switching modes correctly on my car, but obviously I can't test drive it because of the speed sensor incompatibility between JDM and Euro gearboxes.

Joe, I'll mail your ECU and TCU back to you first thing on Tuesday morning.

The new TCU functionality is as follows:

1) The economy shift map is disabled.
2) When the economy switch is on, the TCU will use the normal shift map and kickdown will give you power mode.
3) When the economy switch is off, the TCU will use the power shift map.

Everything else is same as factory.

Please test it out and post your results. I'm confident that it will work, but don't panic if it doesn't. I'm going to be away for a week from Friday so I'll catch up with you when I return.

Phil, that is excellent, thank you.

I'm in no hurry for the TCU or the ECU. If you want to keep either or both for further research, be my guest.

If you do post them back to me I would be delighted to try out the TCU straight away.

My good news is in relation to Jersey Girl, she is now registered for Ireland, and I am giving her some gentle use. So I can try out the TCU on her, that will be a good test.

There are a few issues to sort with the car, some serious, most are trivial. Most serious for the moment would be the rear brakes. Rear left is dragging and gets heated in a short drive. The day I drove the car for registration the brakes "disappeared" through overheating, I had to pump the pedal to avoid the back of a bus! I'm going to replace the two rear disks, use Greenstuff pads and put on braided hoses all round. Naturally I will have to replace or repair the rear caliper; probably the piston seals are bad. As part of this renewal I will bleed down all the old fluid from the system and replace with Dot 4. I suspect what is currently in the system is there for years and has taken on water due to the deliquescent nature of brake fluid.

Other minor issues include:

Needs two front CV boots.

Needs tracking, front wheels are toed out.

Needs a radio installed plus CD changer.

Needs plugs changed.

Needs some small car park dings removed by dent removal guys.

Needs some touch-up paint in a few places; the front bumper has a couple of small marks on the corners, plus two stone chips on the bonnet.

The interior is practically perfect, I won't have to do much there, but I do intend to give the seats loads of leather conditioner. They tend to harden with age.

There are minor scratches on the moving door glass. I'm planning to remove and replace the grit impregnated glass guides to stop this from worsening.

A labour of love

Joe

Hi Tom

Thanks for the offer, I'd say Phil would possibly take you up on that if there is any fundamental difference in the American units.

Can you think of anything specific to the American control units that would be beneficial to look at, or anything you would like altered as an experiment?

Joe
