HP 4850 or 4890 Scanner versus HP Photosmart 3210?
Anyone with any scanner experience.
Is there a big difference between 4800x4800 dpi @ 48-bit versus 4800x9600 dpi @ 48-bit? Is the photo printing capability of the Photosmart worth the buy or should I just buy a photo printer separately? So I guess it's either all in one or buy a scanner and photo printer ~ the same price. Thanks for the feedback. Oh yeah here's what I'm looking to do: 1. scan written notes and hand drawn diagrams 2. scan text from books, magazines, articles, whatever 3. scan film negatives 4. scan bills 5. scan regular documents 6. i'd like to have a photo printer eventually but is not required now a. photo printer must be able to read from memory cards and function without being attached to a computer 7. scanner to be connected to winfax (optional) Last edited by Noir; 02-18-2006 at 03:52 PM. |

I was just comparing the photo printers available from hp and noticed that all the color/photo resolutions were the same for nearly all their printers ranging from $69.99-$399.99.
The major differences were the the interfaces for image access, 2.5" lcd screens, and the printing speeds. So am I mistaken to say that the quality between the el cheapo photo printers are just as good as the photos from their expensive line? I also noticed the differences between the scanners: Scanjet photo and Scanjet Digitals. Photo's alot slower but can read color saturation a whole hell of alot better versus the lower, faster dpi ones. Meh, oh well. |

you might also want to look at Epson's line of scanners -- extremely easy to set up and use and great output.

yes, when i get the time, i'll have to check it out. compared to hp how's epson's support website? how about the quality of their products? i went ahead and hit the store to pickup that hp photojet 3210 to test it out. if it blows, then i'll return and try another. the only answer i didn't get from any of informative hp sites was the scan speed of this particular all-in-one. i noticed that the scanjet's speed was about 6 pages per minute. hopefully this one won't be too much slower than that. i'd love to compare the quality of the 4800x9600 versus 4800x4800. i'm assuming the difference will be minimal but i've been wrong many-a-times. |

I've used HP and Epson hardware in the past and been happy with both. I went with an Epson scanner for home use (aka my wife's photography business) as all of the graphic artists at work I talked to about scanners are using Epson scanners and were very happy with the ease of use and quality of the scans.

I prefer to stay away from 'All in One' devices:
1) Fewer choices, generally lower overall functionality. 2) If one part goes bad toss the whole device, repairs tend to cost more than buying new . . . When looking at printers, look at the ink cartridges. Buy a printer with seperate cartridges for EACH color of ink. I guarantee you won't use all of your inks at the same rate, with a multicolor cartridge you'll be throwing away a lot of ink. Normally these printers will cost more, but it's worth it in the long run. HP has admitted that they sell their printers at a loss knowing they'll get their money back in ink cartridge sales. You could try an ink cartridge refill kit to get around the problem of running out of one color of ink. I've heard pros and cons on them, I don't have any experience with them. Check out www.newegg.com, they have good prices and I like the customer reviews on the products they sell. www.zipzoomfly.com also has good prices but no customer review system. Dan PS: My job includes Desktop Publishing for a 'fairly large' printing company (R.R. Donnelley). |
