To Mod or Not to Mod?
So, okay. I love my SVX. It's unique - I've already gotten a few looks like.."what...what the HELL is that?"...and it handles like a car on rails.
Here's the thing: I'm pretty sure my CRX si could take it in a 1/4 mile. It's just not that fast. (I haven't even seen the fabled power light yet. Maybe I should romp on it a bit more.) SO. Here are my options. 1) Leave the SVX as it is and enjoy it, and mod the CRX. I know how to pretty much make my CRX a complete freak and make it own everything south of a Ferarri for around $5k. 2) Get funky with the SVX - start trying to save weight. buy a 3.3 motor and tear it down, rebuild it with cams and ported heads, and install it with a 5-speed. The downside is that if I do this, I'll probably go whole hog and have a custom Miami Dolphins paint job done - this will in the long run cost me around $8k. From experience, is a modded SVX reliable with a 5-speed? I'll soon have slotted/drilled rotors, so the brake issue shouldn't be a big thing, but...will it work as a daily driver? |

Theres no aftermarket for the SVX so just make any simple mods you can make. 5 spd swap is definitley a great thing. The car is so much more fun to drive with a 5 spd. I saw you swap that in...and mod the CRX and you will enjoy the SVX too.

You can do much more to the CRX, so I would do some of the performance things on the SVX and go for the gusto on the CRX.

The '97 does not show the power light during hard acceleration. But by all means, romp on it anyway.

Hmm... I've always been against modding an SVX, but lately I've been thinking, the more folks mod and flog 'em, the sooner well-maintained, unmolested copies may appreciate in value.
It's not a race car and never will be, excepting a radical departure from stock. It's puzzling why those who want something quicker don't just buy something quicker, 'cos there's plenty out there. dcb |
