svx in the snow..
I thought i'd be horrible, but it actually drove pretty nicely. once the rear wheels kick in, it has stability... just gotta wait for that thud. anyway, what do you guys think about the svx's performance in the snow?

Mine is incredible in the snow. Even better than the SUV I owned (except in truly deep snow of course.).
Sounds like you need a new transfer clutch if you wait for the rear wheels to kick in with a thud.

After driving alot of winters with other Scoobys i was'nt to impressed with the SVX last nite . I like the Loyales and the GL-10's much better. Just my opinion don't jump me for this one.

I agree on the loyales - I could run circles around an svx or a legacy in the snow with the little red wagon. It was just way more predictable in how the 4wd system reacted. The skinny tires and 5spd probably helped alot too .
I have driven older legacys, new legacys, gl hatchback, and 4 dr sedans in the snow and I have to say the loyale was the best balance for snow. I haven't ever tried a brat but I bet they are pretty damn good too.

snow subies...
I have had a total of 5 Subarus. A BRAT, loyale, Legacy (2), and my beloved SVX.
In comparison, the SVX is the worst in the snow. That might have something to do with the Yoko db's... The best (by far) is the BRAT. The hi/lo transfer case and the 4 speed work very well. A couple of 70# sand tubes in the bed by the wheel wells also helps. Subarus are made for the snow!

I had Yoko avs db's and they are not great in the snow. I got Conti-Extreme Contacts now and I like that tire a lot.
But My 91 Legacy with GY Aquatreads is much better in the snow. The advantage of not so wide tire.

It's the wide, low profile tires on the SVX that hurt it's performance. Tall, narrow tires are the way to go on hardpack and ice since it puts more tire pressure to the surface per square inch of contact area.
When I had my SUV I had stock tires on it and could run circles around the guys with the big 4x4's with the monster tires on them. I would laugh my butt off as I cruised on past them as sure footed as a mountain goat while they slid off the road or spun their tires. Huge, wide tires are good for one thing - mud. There is logic and then there is redneck logic. Comparing the SVX to other Subies is like comparing apples to oranges. Lets compare apples to apples. Compared to other sport cars and GT's (AWD and otherwise), the SVX owns the road in the snow!

O yeah the skinnier tires make a tremendous difference, i switched from 235/75 to 215/75's on the cherokee last year and won't go back.

Has anyone added weight to the trunk to try and get more traction out of the rear?

Or...
You could always humiliate your SVX by slapping on a set of steel rims with some studded 185/75-14 mud&snows on it.
Take that you Legacy and Brats! "Time to burn some dust. Eat my rubber!" <Can you tell I've been watching "Christmas Vacation"?>
