New car time
Not for me. I'm sticking with my SVX and 20-year-old MR2. Last weekend we decided that the problems we're having with my wife's car outweigh the fact that we're not making payments on it.
Unfortunately used Subarus are hard to come by in central Illinois and I'm not thrilled by the prospect of losing several grand in the first year with a new car. I looked around in Southeast Wisconsin and found several we liked. We ended up with a 2005 Atlantic Blue Pearl Outback 2.5i. We were looking at previous-gen Outbacks originally, so the stuff you get with a 2005+ base model like ours really impresses me. My wife loves the car, of course. It's quite the step up from a '95 Legacy Brighton wagon. I think the Outback is a really pretty car. It'll be sort of a shame when they change the styling to match the Tribeca and Impreza. Hats off to Sommer's Subaru in Mequon for hearing me say, 'you will take $4000 off that price' and not batting an eye. They gave me zero crap, did what they had to do to make the sale, and won my business.

That is good to hear. I love my 98 Outback. It drives great and has lots of room and decent mileage to boot. And best of all - It's a Subaru!

I like those old MR2's... especially the 1st Gen supercharged models.

Good going Nick. Excellent choice. I do think they are really handsome cars, which is sweet, because the Tribeca or current WRX cars would win ugliness contests. We warned them about that beercan ringpull nose job, but they went ahead and did it anyway! I love my twin turbo Legacy estate. It is set up for road work, and does not have the Outback ground clearance, but I can trust it to go places, and at some serious speeds too. I'm putting my black SVX on the road in February, and I will be sorry to part with the Legacy then, but I miss the plush ride and quietness of the SVX. Best of luck with the Outback. Joe

Congratulations on the new car Nick and Amber! Sounds great and I hope she serves you well for many years.
What are you doing with the old one? Trade her in? Todd

This makes the Outback a far better off-road or occasional off-road vehicle than a large percentage of so-called SUVs. Such as Honda's CR-V, much revered for the suburban school run and parking on high[ish] kerbs. Joe

I've gone way off road in the Pathfinder. We have taken the Forester what most would call soft off road, and it did fine. I looked for big holes and swamps with the Nissan. She never got stuck. I had it sink up to the frame rail and it pulled right through. I don't know if I would have taken the Forester into that wetland though. Wife would kill me if I messed up her car.

I've driven my mom's CR-V around the horse pastures and some pretty gross stuff, and it did okay. With better tires it would probably be more competent, but I hate the AWD system in those things. The front has to slip considerably before the rear will help at all. Even then it's very slight so the back end doesn't kick around at all. That car will predictably understeer in every circumstance. It has to - if the back end kicked out, ever, the outside rear wheel could catch and tip the car over.
It doesn't even really have a lot of space inside or get good mileage. It's an okay car, but I'd rather have an Outback and my mom's looking for one.
