I grew up with a sex offender right down the road. The neighbors told my parents the day we moved in and they told me the next day. We just werent allowed near the house or the guy who lived there. We still live in that house 10 years later, now there are 10 kids on my street and their parents dont watch them at all. Scares the sh*t of me when i think about it. (the good thing is they are too busy scratching the SVX and petting my rottweiler when i'm not home to investigate his house.)

Unfortunately there isnt much one can do. You cant make them live in colonies forever. They finished thier punishment, you cnat punish them forever. Moving isnt helpful, there could be another in your area or one could move in. The best you can do is watch your kids, dont let your wife walk outside alone at night, and be watchful.

I don't interact with my neighbors other than the occasional eye contact and hat tip, so it would not bother me.

I know wackos are out there, and unless I'm living next to a clepto, I really don't see any cause for worry.

Also, I don't have kids and I can defend myself plenty.

Anchorage is a damn minefield with red and blue dots everywhere.

2 people within .7 miles, but not my immediate neighborhood.

They don't tell you what the offense was.

One place I used to live in So Cal, it was safe for my wife to go out at night alone . . .

PS: I'm not meaning to offend any of our non-heterosexual members, I have several friends and coworkers of both genders who aren't 'straight'.

My state gives you general info but no conviction info. I looked at MI (used to live there) and they list the conviction codes and number of convictions. I wish they would all do that, i'd like to know what type of crime my neighbor convicted of.

The only person listed as a rapist in my town lives on the street next to my boyfriends moms street. I happened to realize she owns a really long lot that meets up with every backyard down that street! They had no idea and their family has owned that house for nearly 100 years! (i know for sure his stepdad's family owned it in the early 40's but i dont know exactly what year they bought it) Its scary, i'm planning on driving down that street to see if its on her side of the street. I'm praying to god its on the other side. I've played in her yard with her dogs and grandson alone countless times! gee, i thought i was careful when it came to these things (i carry mace, a tactile flashlight, and i always lock the doors in my car and i never walk alone in parking lots! Who know you should be more watchful in your FMIL's backyard?

That's a great link, but this stinks:

No mapable data

Unfortunately, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont do not currently provide addresses for registered sex offenders. Consequently, we are unable to provide adequate or meaningful information about sex offenders located in these states.

I have a lot of wackadoos living near me...heck had a peeping tom stalking my 15 yr. old daughter last year. All the police told me was nothing could be done that I had to catch him on video...so a fellow SVXr came and installed window locks & motion lights to keep him away.

Perhaps they have a smaller list of non-offenders

There are 2 ON MY BLOCK!!! and I have a 14 year old daughter still home!!

Come on guys, these people are people too. It is amazing how some people dont recognize that people can make mistakes and change. It is ok to be cautious but don't think they are crazy or anything. At the age of 13 one of my best friends was a 27 year old guy who was a registered sex offender for "raping" a boy. Never had a problem with it, he called my parents after he met me and told them the "situation" he was in and that if they didn't want me to be around him they should tell me now and stop me from going over there. They told me and allowed me to make my own decision. Next time I was around him he made sure my parents told me, called them to confirm, was surprised he was considered human unlike everyone else in the neighborhood who looked upon him as a spawn from hell itself. The guy was a great guy and genuine person who could not have been more nice to me and everyone else despite the fact that they were all pricks to him.

The guy got me interested in cars, helped me further myself in martial arts, taught me how to do fire poi, let me take a few rides in his ferrari, and was a great guy. I am not avocating to send your children off to play with sex offenders, but please look at them as real people.

And before you people bash on my parents for allowing me to do what I did, understand that I am a special case. I knew how to defend myself and at the age of 13 had two different blackbelts in two styles and was open state martial arts champion when I was 12. Had it not been for my age my hands would have been registered deadly weapons with the police department (which happened at 16). + my parents are open minded and trust people. Yes, something could have happened to me, but the fact is, it didn't.

You have to realize that sex offenders make it appear to people that they change, but that's just so they can get back into the real world just so they can earn peoples' trust....and then .....they do it again.
They have an addiction man...and a sick one.

The offendor 0.27 miles from my house moved out 6 months ago. Wonder if the State knows that?

Not all of them have an addiction. Yes, some of them will be repeat offenders but just as many never do it again. Not all of them are even guilty. Children make terrible witnesses they say what they think the adult wants to hear, they makeup what they have forgot, they lie without realizing it, and they are extremely easy to lead on the witness stand.

Bwb3 you can call call the sex offender registry and ask if they know about it.

The sex offender that lives near me is a very nice man. I wouldnt let him play with my boyfriends 4 year sister but i do wave when i drive past him while he mows his lawn.

On the state website here it'll tell you what you need to know. I think it is good to know who they are.

We have a guy a few towns over that was charged with assaulting a sheep.
