when to replace fuel filter

I've checked my owner's manual and have been unable to locate a replacement schedule for the fuel filter in the engine compartment. Can anyone provide info on when to replace the filter?

Re: when to replace fuel filter

Have you ever changed it? If not, do it and you'll never have to do it again. They are good for a very long time unless you run into some really dirty fuel.

Re: when to replace fuel filter

I haven't changed it and the car has 75000+ miles. When I bought it, a couple of years ago, it had 55000+ miles and I thought that it might be a good time to replace it as I get the car (1995 year) ready for summer. It doesn't cost much and easy to access next to the brake fluid container but since the fuel is under pressure, are there special precautions to take while losing the fuel line clamps?

people have said to pull the fuel pump relay and try to start the car, it will lose the pressure, if you dont do that you will have fuel spray but it isn't that bad

Thanks for the info but where is the fuel pump relay? Is there a fuse in the fuse box that I cad remove that will have the same effect? If there's just a small fuel spray, I can just cover the filter with a rag.

Re: when to replace fuel filter

I've changed loads of fuel filters on various Subarus and never had a problem, just slacken the clips on the filter inlet/outlet pipes, pull off hoses (small amount of petrol comes out) remove and replace- job done
