Is it OK to....?

Drive a short distance with two different kind of plugs? I changed two and I am waiting fot the other four to come in. Should be very soon, but just in case, is it OK. I have 4 of the factory NGK platinum and 2 ZEX. I have my truck to drive, but if I need to haul both my kids(like to pick up the plugs), I will need the car. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I don't think driving with different plugs will cause any problems, as long as all 6 are firing, you could run 6 different brands, but I suggest you replace the other 4 soon just so they all wear the same.

Yup, the last time a dealer did a minor tuneup (fluids, filters, plugs, checks) to my SVX they installed NGKs on one side and Bosch on the other. My dad took it in and didn't tell me about it, so when I decided to change the fuel filter and plugs, I was surprised to find the different plugs and how clean the fuel filter was. The plugs on one side were also loose enough for me to practically remove them without the wrench! Except for wheel bearings, that was the last time I let a dealer shop do anything to my SVX, other than state inspections.

Kuo, I remember you posting about this "somewhere else." That was a long, long time ago (seems like it anyway). How did the two sets of plugs compare in burn/buildup characteristics. Did the electrode look more burnt on one than the other? Could you give us a report?

The only reason I ask is because on every car I've ever owned since the Bosch Platinum came out, one of the first things I did was to convert to Bosch Platinum plugs. I have not done this with the SVX. Why, you ask? Upon advice of the one mechanic I trust to work on my car. He told me to stick with the Stock NGK's or Denso's. He knew that I put Bosch in all my other cars and had never tried to sway me from it, so it isn't that he things they are bad. He just said that, in this case, in a car this "complicated" he'd stick with the Manufacturer's recommendation.

I only ran about 10k miles on the mixed plugs, as I didn't know he had already had the work done. Good thing too, since I probably would've neglected it longer had I known that it had already been done. I don't recall the details, but neither set showed anything abnormal, except for the excess oil buildup on the threads of one of the plugs, which further encouraged me to soon replace the valve cover seals on that side.

I think we compared the NGK plugs vs the Bosch +4's when Ray changed his, and found that the NGK's had a larger platinum center electrode. This presumbably is the reason why they last and perform well, and most likely why they cost so much more. None of us have any equipment to measure changes in the car's response with different plugs, so we really can't say which is better. I know that it's been at least a year, probably closer to two since I've put the Bosch plugs in and I'm still happy with the performance and fuel economy.
