I can't believe how much clearance the current Outback has - Subaru increased it to 8.5 inches.

Congratulations on the new car Nick and Amber! Sounds great and I hope she serves you well for many years.

What are you doing with the old one? Trade her in?

Todd

I'd believe it.

This makes the Outback a far better off-road or occasional off-road vehicle than a large percentage of so-called SUVs. Such as Honda's CR-V, much revered for the suburban school run and parking on high[ish] kerbs.

I've gone way off road in the Pathfinder. We have taken the Forester what most would call soft off road, and it did fine. I looked for big holes and swamps with the Nissan. She never got stuck. I had it sink up to the frame rail and it pulled right through. I don't know if I would have taken the Forester into that wetland though. Wife would kill me if I messed up her car.

I've driven my mom's CR-V around the horse pastures and some pretty gross stuff, and it did okay. With better tires it would probably be more competent, but I hate the AWD system in those things. The front has to slip considerably before the rear will help at all. Even then it's very slight so the back end doesn't kick around at all. That car will predictably understeer in every circumstance. It has to - if the back end kicked out, ever, the outside rear wheel could catch and tip the car over.

It doesn't even really have a lot of space inside or get good mileage. It's an okay car, but I'd rather have an Outback and my mom's looking for one.

That terminal understeer is what I mean about CRV's Nick.

They are a good to very good road car in my opinion, pretty well put together, but they are NOT an off roader. The 4WD label is misleading in this case.

I think the Forester is light years ahead of the CR-V for any off roading, I'm not sure about the RAV4. The new RAV4 with the available 255hp V-6 is going to cut into FXT sales.

Here in Ireland, and indeed Europe generally, people who want this type of SUV will absolutely have to have a diesel engine, and usually with manual gearbox.

Which makes it strange that Subaru are still persisting with petrol, and no diesel in the range. Particularly as they are long-time champions of the 4wd cause.

Considering how difficult it is to survive in the world auto market, they are missing a serious trick here. I know it's different in the US market. You guys have had cheap petrol for so long, you seem to be totally unafraid of high consuming or inefficient vehicles.

I am willing to bet as your gas prices drift inexorably upwards towards the silly prices we pay over here, that your market will go the same way. You will start buying modern efficient turbodiesels.

In the BMW and Audi ranges in particular, top of the range diesel engines are actually faster than the petrol equivalents, and still deliver 10 to 20 mpg better than the petrol.

It is the way of the future for a while. Hybrids are good, but are a fad for the present, not a real alternative like the diesel models.
