The RB engines or at least the one in the Skyline are built like Hondao nes to have a higher stroke, which means higher hp but less torque. How else do they manage to get 350hp stock out of a 2.5l I6, even with twin turbochargers.

True. I guess having more hp and less torque makes it more controllable through twisties. 640 ft lbs is nothing to sneeze at though.

I like the 1500hp semi truck engines.... 1500hp at like... 2000rpms and well over 3000lb/ft of torque... gotta love it

HP is hardly anything without torque... look at our cars... torque is a necessity

the STi gets 300hp stock out of a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine with one turbocharger, with 300 ft-lbs o' torque.

nothing amazing going on with the factory Skyline engine.

Except that it made that kind fo power ~15 years ago, when 300hp out of a twin-turbo 3.0L was a big thing.

If you don't remember, those cars were the big things back then. They outclassed the Corvettes of the time and gave Porsches runs for their money. Not to mention that both the Supra TT and the Skyline GT-R both had 500hp built engines detuned to 300hp.

My main point was that while it may not be amazing now, that Skyline's power (and particularly, like the Supra, its potential) was a pretty big deal back then.

i'm saying that it really wasn't a big deal to get that kind of power from a 6 cylinder engine and forced induction at the time. the only thing restricting even more power was the Japanese "gentleman's agreement" of limiting their engine power to 276hp. American power of choice was the V8, but there was the Gran National, Syclone/Typhoon, Thunderbird Turbo, etc. floating around. Porsche, and Porsche tuners, had been getting huge power from a turbo 6 for a long time.

I agree.

Everyone thinks skylines are hailed by everyone around the world... They really aren't. Hell, Japanese tend to rebadge the new ones as Infinity G35s.

They weren't a "corvette killer" at all. They are just super rare (as they've never been imported here) and could be modified to make a ton of power (like most turbo 6cyl engines can) That made them into this "icon", specifically in the import happy california tuner world. Supras, VR4s, DSMs, Etc have made that much power, out of equal or smaller engines.

Oh, and I was wondering why my computer froze everytime I tried to view it last week... Stupid sites that don't like firefox.

I'll concur with that. But from that perspective, the STi doesn't seem that remarkable either, at least from an engine standpoint. Now, the fact that they put that engine into a nice, lightweight chassis and built it to carve corners makes the car remarkable.

Talk about a joke... This interim Skyline is a joke compared to the designs of the 90's. Hopefully the upcoming Skyline GT-R will earn back the respect it used to have.

Tell me about it. Of course, everything that's rare is the best, right? That's why all the import kids here looooove JDM stuff.

I see little difference between the Skyline and other 90's Japanese supercars, except for the rear-wheel-based AWD. The 3000GT's AWD was front-wheel-based.
