Rear-Bearing problem maybe.....

Im so screwed....here is the deal I just had my tires rotated and I made a 5 hr trip to fla. and i noticed on the way down there that the right rear seemed to be making a loud rurrrhh'ing noise that was a pulsating noise. Now that im back at school when i drive it i noticed it got worse, now it is so loud and its a real loud pulsating noise thats even vibrating so plastic parts in the back by the speakers. And i was planning on going home this weekend for service. But now im afraid that it wont make it. My dad thinks it could be the rear wheel bearing. And he thinks it could seize-up. (And no its not the tires) If anyone has had this problem please let me know what to do. Thanks.....

You may be right, but my bearing problems have been much more gradual, taking many miles to get to the point that I KNEW it was the bearings and not the tires. Also I never had a vibration.

Bottom line, IMHO, get it looked at pronto. It sounds dangerous.

You mention that you just had the tires rotated - presuming you mean you had a shop handle it, I wonder if they might have horrendously overtorqued the lug nuts? People have reported that as a cause of bearing failure... not that that helps you now, as you're probably stock replacing at least one of them. I'd check the torque on those wheels - I bet they're on there with extreme force.

Either way, it sounds like A Bad Thing(tm) and you should probably get it looked at asap. Perhaps others have other thoughts?

Too many baseball cards in the spokes?

Chris, I just registered today, and this is my first posting.
Get the wheel/bearing checked right away!! I had the same
symptoms you describe after replacing a set of lug nuts, with
cheaper, non-Subaru nuts (which are ~ $11 each). These
looked the same , but turns out these did NOT tighten the
wheel all the way down. It's possible instead of over torquing
the lug nuts (should be ~ 80 ft-lbs) they may be loose!! Jacking
up the car and checking the wheel should tell you. Bearings
typically would wear away slowly, not go bad all of a sudden
with your symptoms.
