Engine Oil Level

The SVX dipstick has holes to indicate upper and lower levels, as well as a notch above the upper level hole. I have had another car with this same dip stick marking. What is the significance of the notch?

I no longer do my own oil changes and service people keep filling the crankcase up to the notch. Could this higher level than normal cause any problems in respect of crankcase breathing, seals, or whatever.

Advice would be appreciated from those who have hands on experience, in regard to bottom-end and the arrangement of the associated components.

The difference is for engine temp.

The Middle notch is full when engine is cold, the top notch is full when the engine is hot.
The bottom notch is empty when the engine is cold, the middle notch is empty when the engine is hot.

If this data, so well set down, is not in the how too section, it should be.

I now know that my engine has been over filled, but as yet there is no comment as to whether this could cause a problem of any sort.

trevor... you know as well as I that a minor over filling of the engine will not cause any major distress... a major overfilling on the other hand... Thats asking for trouble
