$2200 is real good. Make sure they give you the 2 yr. warantee. Also, they usually screw up the AC on tranny changes. So make sure it works BEFORE you get it done.

The Subaru dealer in Santa Fe quoted me $3500 for the tranny plus $500 for the install, and an independent shop here quoted me $2800 for a rebuild (that includes new planetaries and torque converter).

For a factory reman, your quote sounds like a good deal, especially with a Subaru 2-year warranty.

I was quoted $2800 from my local dealer, which was previously on the low side for dealer quotes. Now the low end must be adjusted to $2200.

If you've dealt with the shop before, or are confident for other reasons that they are dependable, I'd go for it.

$2200 for tranny? Great price. I had mine for 2500 plus install...paid about $3200 last year. BUT... I had to return to the dealer's 3 times. The first 2 trannys were bad, luckily the third one they put in has been doing good. The dealership 5 miles from me is asking for $4100 including labor. Shesh!

If you get a Subaru remanufactured tranny installed by a Subaru dealer be sure he gives you the $1200.00 core charge credit for your old transmission.

Many dealers won't tell you about this and keep that money for themselves. Be sure to ask for it.

(At $2200.00 he may already be figuring in the core credit)

Rebuilt Tranny

Hey Jim that's a great price!!! Just make sure that's installed and a factory rebuilt and you should be golden (for at least 2 years 24k). For Cumberland Valley Motors to rebuild mine (its a 95 so they won't put a SOA rebuilt in) it was like $3300 3 years ago. I'm guessing you took it to the Subaru dealer in Reading? You can try Lancaster County Motors or CVM but I can almost be sure you'll be paying $1000 more.

Are you coming down to the meet next weekend??

Why don't you go to a dealership and test drive an SVX for the day. There's a Red one in Lancaster and a Pearly one in Reinholds at dealers. Just think of it as an extended test drive.

Jim, after the work is done, I'd LOVE to get a copy of the work order. If your dealer will do it for $2200 installed, I'll take that copy to my dealer and ask him where he came up with $4000.

Keep me posted, please.

Transmissions

Take a few minutes and visit www.auto-rx.net
might find alternative to $ 2000.00 transmission work.

Significant Technical Input
I'd make sure about what I'm getting for $2200. I can't buy one that cheap from the dealer (local or out of state), even with my trade discount. Possibly they're selling you a transmission without the differential or possibly one built at the dealer or from a local source.

If anyone needs to have their automatic transmission replaced and are located in the midwest (Ne, Ia,Ks,Mo) You should check out Certified Transmission www.certifiedtransmissions.com
I work for Certified, they are one of a handful of companies that Remanufacture not just rebuild the transmission. I saw a transmission for a 95 SVX in our reman center in Omaha and asked the builder what had failed, he said diffo exploded, and forward clutches burnt. In anycase the core was bad and not buildable. Curious (because my son just purchased a 92 SVX) I called the retail store manager in Kansas City to see what the job was going to retail out at. Reman transmission (includes reman converter) fee for bad core, and install was $2,700. I don't know what warranty the end user wanted, 12/12 24/24 or 5/50. Anyway knowing what all goes into a reman vers a rebuilt unit I thought the guy was getting a heck of a deal!

So it might pay to ck out Certified if you live near one of the retail stores OR we sell world wide....but only to repair shops or distributers in select markets.
