Night from hell comming back from meet.

A wheel bearing exploded on me coming back last night, the same one I had replaced last weekend at ROOS ONLY. It spewed grease everywhere. I broke down at 1:30am and didn't get towed till 5:00am. Got into Dever about 11:00. Upon uloading my car from the truck, the driver noticed that my back wheel was stuck, as in won't turn. It cost me $354 for the towing and I had the car dropped off at the the garage that evidently screwed up my car.

wow, that has much suck!
i'd make the garage re-imburse you for the tow, and do the wheel bearing right (if you still trust them.) otherwise sue the tools off them!

I had something similar happen with a private subaru-only shop. They did both my rear bearings, and they went bad again within 2 weeks. They did them again under warranty and they went bad again 2 weeks later. The shop told me they were not going to fix it again, so I had to have the dealer do it to the tune of $1100.

Angry Nightmare scenario

Sorry to hear this Davy. Glad the breaking bearing did not cause an accident, and you are OK.

Sue the pants off them if they don't fix it properly, and reimburse you for towing and other expenses.

Joe

Dave,
That sucks!!!
You should have stayed over, we had a spare room, then at least you wouldn't have broken down in the dark. Glad that it didn't happen driving over the monument in the snow, because that could have caused a scary situation.
I hope the shop makes good on it for you.
Let us know how things go.
It was great to meet you and I'm really glad you came.

I can't believe the conversation that we had at lunch on who had been towed. I am glad everything came out ok so far. Hope you get it fixed right this time. It was great to meet you in person at the meet.

PS I got back home on Sunday at 12:00 noon. All is great.

It's a good thing I had my cell phone as I was in the middle of pitch black nowhere. About 15 or 20 minutes outside of GJ in the canyon. I probably should have spent the night, but even so I would of had to deal with it today. That was very kind of you to offer that Michelle. I've now learned my lesson not to drive long distances late at night when there's a choice.

Anyway, It was great meeting everybody and I had a VERY good time, despite the mishap on the way back.

Davie,

I know EXECTLY what you are talking about. It happened to me just as you described on the way to the last Reading meet. In my case, the wheel bearing stop working, the only thing that held my wheel in was the rear caliper bracket. The wheel was stuck and if I kept going another couple of miles, the wheel would have left my car and I'd been in a ditch and may not even be alive.

Put it this way, be glad you caught it that quick. In my case, I had to re-do the whole section, bearing, wheel assy, pins, new brakes (both drum and disk)... well, the whole corner. The total bill for me ran me $1,800.

Good luck

L

Lwin, It's not pretty and I hope they don't hold me responsible for whatever else may have gotten screwed up. When rolling the car onto the bed of the truck, it sounded like an empty soda can being ground up in a blender.
Didn't a shop screw yours up aswell? Why didn't they pick up the entire bill?

That is because I brought in my own Subaru parts (I went to a local shop to have it installed).

They paid 1500 out of the 1800 when I mentioned the word "lawyer" They refunded 1200 the money to me and owe me 300 in labor. They still owe me about 150 in labour... So it was not too bad. I know exactly how your car felt. So does Doug. He helped me all the way and we remember and joke about the day now.

night from hell....

Sorry to hear about the bearing problem....what a pita....

Just Roos suck big time. They will never touch any of my cars!
I had my rear bearings done at my long time Suby shop (wings stuff) just before the 10th meet. and have had no problems at all.
Roos owes you! Don't let them off the hook! They are a bunch of ass#*@&s.

You should have called Stephen and I, we would have left our fancy room at the Holiday Inn and come rescued you! Misery loves company!

If I can be any help with this bearing hassle, just let me know!

It was a genuine pleasure to meet you at the gathering, Davey!

Likewise Tom.
I talked to roos only today and they were all too eager to compensate me for the towing. They said they'd have the car fixed by thursday. That's great news. I was very worried about having to pick up the towing costs.
