Custom Information System

So while I'm fiddling with my SVX and fighting it's issues, I realized how great it would be if I had a system that could give me more information than checking CEL's could.

I also know of the interface that would allow you to go from SVX to USB to get live data, which gives quite a bit of information.

That's the kind of thing I'd be thinking of recreating, but with 2 major differences. 1: It'll give more information and 2: It would be a permanent attachment that gives quick information and could also have stereo functions and accessory automation built in as secondary functions.

I'd like for the system to be able to give-
- Engine Speed
- Vehicle Speed
- O2 sensor, MAF, TPS, and coolant sensor reading
- A/F ratio
- injector info
- Fuel pressure, manifold vacuum pressure, and exhaust back pressure
- Transmission/ AWD system info
- Electrical System (Alternator and battery voltage, power draw through the different circuits
- ABS info
- Instantaneous and average fuel mileage

I'm thinking at this point that it would run on a PC of some sort with a small screen and some sort of physical interface with either some existing software with some modifications or, most likely, new software to be compatible with the stereo and automation functions.

I feel that if we are going to drive a car that looks like a spaceship, why not give it tech of a space ship?

Any thoughts? I probably wouldn't even start work on something like this for quite a while since I'm so busy fixing the regular issues to make new ones for myself

Re: Custom Information System

I think ecutune already has software that will do all that. Or at least a lot of that, however you will need some specialized cables and adapters, usually linking back to a laptop. I'm not sure how you would integrate that into built in display but I imagine somebody with some motivation could do it.

Re: Custom Information System

I believe there are ODB readers with bluetooth that will send such information to your smart phone. It looks like the one below doesn't support Android or IOS, but you can look around at different ones.

I probably should've specified that if I were to do this, it would be for the OBD1 cars, otherwise I'd just plug that in and call it a day

Re: Custom Information System

What are the odds that upgrading to OBD-II as a starting point would be easier?

Re: Custom Information System

I think you can do "dashboards" (virtual gauges) with the Evoscan. I haven't taken the time, though. Looking at the numbers live or logging the data to a *.csv file and playing around with Excel is more than enough for me. Works great.

I love when I come up with an idea and then see someone else already has a solution

Note to self: An investment in Evoscan and a cable is a good idea

Re: Custom Information System

Yeah, get the adapter and cable from Mike - not the one from Evoscan.

Re: Custom Information System

So I have a raspberry Pi hardwired into my svx. I also have written software in python for monitoring. I can shed some light on a few things you want to do.

First the ECU is a bottleneck for monitoring. What I mean by that is you will probably only be able to get about 4 parameters values a second. That does not include talking to the TCU. The parameters you are wanting to monitor are can be done directly from the ECU except:

ABS
Transmission / AWD info
Fuel, Manifold, etc pressure
Average / Instant MPG.

They just are not easy to monitor. If you can get some input and create an algorithm yourself you can monitor it.

Way interesting and tempting. Can you post in a separate thread details, photos etc? Update: found some of your info but a separate thread still would be appreciated i.e. with more photos, links, and maybe a link to your Pi software.

I planned to post more once I feel the software is at a release state. I am still working out the GUI and a few other features. If you have questions feel free to PM me. I still have the project and am I working on it just have 3 months of schooling left so the project has not gotten the attention it deserves.
