Best Tranny Cooler
Searching turned up too many results so i figured i would ask this here. Going to install tranny cooler before my trip up to the mountains this weekend. Need a little better cooling because I always see the trans temp light just before i reach the top of berthoud pass. I have LAN's tcu so i figure it's hotter than i want but not cooked yet.
1. What kind and what size did you use? 2. Gauge? |

Re: Best Tranny Cooler
For reasons I have stated in the past (miminum flow resistance and avoiding excessive cooling for cold weather), I like the following options, found at summitracing.com:
Flex-a-lite 4109 Flex-a-lite 4110 Summitracing SUM-G4966 Even the 4109 should still have three times the cooling capacity of the internal cooler, if I recall correctly.

Re: Best Tranny Cooler
LAN's recommended setup, a cooler inside the front fender with a thermostatically controlled fan should be good also...

Re: Best Tranny Cooler
I sure hope you also will be installing a proper gauge as well.

Re: Best Tranny Cooler
cooler is a must, gauge also wanted. will probably have to order one as all the local shops stock gauges but not senders or kits to hook them up. anyone got a part number for a good gauge that works with stock sender or a kit that works well?

Re: Best Tranny Cooler
if the temp ranges are similar (I am not sure) you could just use one of the aftermarket engine coolant gauges with the fluid capillary tube attached to it, then replace your stock sending unit with the one attached to the gauge, (hopefully no drilling and tapping required) tighten everything down and then check for leaks.

Re: Best Tranny Cooler
got the cooler installed in the fender well, pretty easy job and didn't see the hot light at all. seemed to shift better the whole trip up the mountains but maybe i'm just optimistic. i hope to find a gauge that will allow me to use the stock sensor on the trans to avoid the capillary tube, i don't like running fluids into the car.

Re: Best Tranny Cooler
Get a B&M remote filter kit from Summit racing - it is already tapped so you can screw a sending unit for an electric temp gauge in there. No need to run any hoses into the car. They use a large Fram PH8A type filter. You get filtering and temp monitoring without much hassle. I have mine mounted in the fenderwell right above where you put your cooler.

Re: Best Tranny Cooler
will probably get that remote filter and adapt a sender to it if i can't find a gauge to work with the stock sending unit. seems like a pretty cheap way to go for an extra filter and the ability to add a gauge.
