New Stereo Deck + MPG Guages?

Over the winter I plan on putting a new head-unit into my SVX. Probably Alpine or similar.

Now with the empty DIN space I was considering mounting a number of guages - transmission temp - engine pressure....and...

I was wondering if there is a way of also mounting a guage that displays the average MPG or MPG you are currently getting.

I know alot of GM cars come with LED or HUD that will display this, and if an LED system can be installed in the bottom that woul dbe nice, But i was thinking more along the lines of BMW - My friend has a 2001 323ci and in the dashboard beside the speedometer there is a little neddle that goes back and forth displaying the MPG of the car.

Basically is it possible to install one of these on our cars? And has anyone done or tried it?

Any other comments appreciated.

Thank ya -
Rob

I know the XT6 came with a trip computer, but I'm not sure if it would display MPG... And I don't know how you'd go about wiring it into an SVX, if it's even possible.. But if it is possible, that's one route.

Check Summit Racing, they might have a fuel economy gauge...

Some sort of wideband, cross-referenced with speed....I'm not sure it can be done aftermarket, you'd need a sensor to determine how much fuel is being used, another to monitor speed, and then software to calculate the two to figure out mileage.

is the closest i found. Unfortunantly for OBDII only . That would have been perfect too.. I guess I'll keep looking or give up.

Anybody else try a similar setup as to what I described? Radio + guages underneath or above?

The radio and gauge deally has been done. Some of them have been documented in the forum.

To my knowledge, the instant fuel economy calculators tap right into the ECU and base their number on speed and the injector firings. It's not something you are going to have any easy time implementing on an SVX!

If you're looking for a sloppy alternative, I believe the pre-digital economy estimators were simply sourced from vacuum or narrowband O2 sensors hooked to gauges marked (surprise) lean, rich, and optimal or something. You may as well just ask your foot if it's on the floor.

Yeah. I remember a guy over on USMB saying how the best MPG indicator is a vacuum gauge. Try to keep it over to the left and you're making the best mpg

Its not to bad. The dash is angled back. so the screen when open sits right ware you can see it good.
