Wood stove link recall

Good call Jerry

I sure do envy you having such a cheap resource on your doorstep. I have to pay for mine.

However I don't begrudge the guy the cost of the timber, it's great value. We are heating the house with sustainable energy, I cut way back on imported oil, plus we get a lovely fire in the living room.

Win/win/win, if I may coin a phrase.

Joe

Re: Wood stove link

If someone were to build a house, say around 2500 sq ft. and wanted to use a wood burning stove as a primary source of heating, what would be the optimal setup without breaking the budget?

The outdoor unit with water pipes and all sounds nice but expensive, would fitting a wood stove to a standard type central air system be the way to go? Or some type of radiator setup.

Re: Wood stove link

You can get a furnace which is wood burning and has oil back up. When you are not home to fill the furnace with wood, the oil will take over to keep the house warm. The other thing you can do is use 2 woodstoves to better distribute the heat throughout the house.
I have a small (1200sq.ft.) house and my Vermont Castings Resolute Acclaim makes plenty of heat for the whole place. I have a large vent above the woodstove to allow more heat to get upstairs to the bedrooms. If I'm not home for a day or 2, the electric baseboard heaters kick in if the temperature drops low enough.

I use one of those Ultra-efficient propane systems for back-up. Primary is a 1947 'Pot belly' stove that I bought at the scrap yard for $75.!!
( This is the part of the house that the women live in)

Since I have to heat this hugh shack in 'zones', the part that only needs heat while occupied had a genaric garage kinda woodburner that got too crazy, too often. I am replacing it with a fireplace insert with a blower this year. In fact, the 'prep' work is going on tonight!!

As far as the outside units, we are installing one at my local brother's house that will heat both the house and the garage. It cost $7,000. and will heat 5,000 sq ft. with 2 fireings per day. The nother-brother is going with the $5,000 unit that heats 3,000 sq ft.

I will stick with the Pot-belly and propane....but will be adding new windows as $$$$$$$'s allow!!

WINDOWS!!! Better Windows!! saves a BUNCH!! If you live in Mid-Atlantic area, SVXbart does that kinda stuff!!

I 'wacked' 5 more trees today!! 2 to get them out of the way, 2 that were threatening to kill a house and 1 just for the fun of it!

I got a call from the guy that I cut for last week. He said that his neighbor had 2 trees that needed cut. I went, I estimated, I came back and WACKED!!

The trees were on his neighbor, but were aiming to smack the back of his house down. She decided that they should go NOW!!
I had to take out 2 small trees so the big ones would not be deflected.
I showed up with the Husky, 100 ft of really strong rope, an Outback and a snatch-block. I chained the snatch-block to a walnut tree, threaded the rope through it, hooked it to the Outback and dropped the tree about 30 ft from the house that it wanted to kill. I cleaned up the mess and tied off the other tree to the Outback. It fell on the sawdust from the first tree!

I wacked it to firewood size, gathered up my toys and rolled on.

I collected $$$$$$ and the firewood went to the woman that paid the bill. The guy that owned the house that was threatened hauled the wood to her house.

Next, I went to OT's house. I noticed that his 'dog' tying tree was not well. Since he needed firewood for the Pumpkin Carve meet, had a tree that might fall on the participants and my saw was warmed up, I wacked his tree too!! I cut it to campfire size pieces and left it for him to stack. N/C!!

I started at 8:45 on monday and was in the shower by 1:30!!
I had $150. to show for the morning and didn't have to haul any wood anywere! What a CONCEPT!!!

I'm feeling a little chilly, I might have to throw a few sticks into the woodburner......

My friend wants to expand his car lot and build a 50X100 garage. The only problem is that he has about 150 TREES in the way!!! I had a three hours between time to drop kid off at school and when I had to be at work, SSSOOOO, he now has 134 trees in his way. I also have another 'cord' of firewood and he has a stack of 'saw' logs. I will be back thursday with a friend and an additional saw and truck.

He tried to stay ahead of the Husky, but I had to shut it off and help him catch up 4 times

I had another 2 hours today...
After clearing out a bunch of small stuff, I took a break.

I lit a cigarette, walked 150 ft to the saw, started it, notched the tree, cut above the notch while Jim pushed the tree with the Bobcat, cut (3) 'saw logs' out of it, shut off the saw and walked back to the Bobcat. It was then that I realized that there was 1/2 inch of my cigarette left!

That means that MY HUSKY KICKS A$$!!!

OK, last tuesday, my friend had over 130 trees in his way.

9 days later, (14 'working' hours), there are 15 trees to go!

He said that we are " Gaining Yardage"! (there is a YARD where there once was trash)!!

Now, let me tell you what was going on. He bought an 8 acre TRASH dump! When we went to cut a tree, he had to push the trash away from the tree with his Bobcat before I had a place to stand! This property had been ABUSED by the former owner!
When you have a 1 acre yard and the only place that you can walk is the 4 wheeler trails, there are ISSUES! At hour number 12, he had the Bobcat in 'overdrive' pushing dirt in places that he had tread carefully days before.

This 'clean-up' has blown a drive chain on the r.r wheel and a pair of hydraulic hoses on the 'cat'. It has also put a major 'hurt' on my new chain on the Husky.

I have burned over 2 gallons of 93 octane in the Husky. Stacked about 4 cords of firewood and the saw-log stack continues to grow. We are cutting anything that will 'compromise' cars that may be parked there. We have 'saved' about 5 Hickory and Butternut trees, 3 really nice Oaks and 3 Maples. We are 'Taking out the trash'..

This will be a BEAUTIFUL 'reclamation' of a really sad piece of W.Va..!

I am SO glad that I became involved!

I just wish that I would have taked 'before' pics!!

Re: Wood stove link

How we doing so far??

I have used propane on 2 lazy days that I was not available to fire the woodstove.

With the latest 'bounty'. I have been fireing the woodstoves hot to make room for more wood! The pick-up is full, but I have no place to unload it.
I gave the next 2 loads to my nephew if he goes out to get it.

Re: Wood stove link

I have only used wood so far this fall although yesterday was anything but fall like.
We had 12-16 inches of heavy snow with 40 mph winds. The power went off for 14 hours. That's when you truly appreciate heating with wood. It may melt tomorrow if the temperature climbs to 50°F as expected.

We had a few wet flurries on tues, but about 10 miles west had from 4 to 7 inches.

The 135 trees that were in my friends way are neatly stacked in 5 locations.

We saved anything that stood a chance of being a tree rather than a liability.
we are now to the point of 'selective' harvesting the other 5 acres.

Re: Wood stove link

OK, another year, more snow and cold...

I have to confess. I have been burning some coal in the old 'pot belly' this year.
I use wood all day, but shift to coal at night. I bought a ton of coal on New years eve, and have gone through about 1/2 of it so far. We had 6 weeks where the temps didn't get far over 20 deg. I was burning wood faster than I could haul it.

As far as the propane 'back up', I have used about 160# of propane, cost about $150.

The coal cost $55. for the 'estimated' ton. but has kept the propane from 'cranking up' very often.

My son-in-law and I cut some dead locust trees yesterday.
They were threatening Mom's garage. I took the Husqvarna out for the first time this season.
Cliff was hacking up some 6 inch stuff and I was grinding up 24in trunks in the same time!!

It felt good to be playing with the Husky. It woud have been like hunting Quail with a bazooka to take Husky on the other trips.

How ya doin'??

Re: Wood stove link

I've burnt 6 cords since October. The only time the electric baseboards have kicked in was 2 days at Christmas when we were away.
January has been unusually warm, highs of 23°F and lows of 19°F to 5°F.
