The FWD fuse is supposed to be for emergency/technical use only. At least, that's what it says in the manual

This was before twin drum 4WD dynos were anyway plentiful. I always presumed this implied that some states in the US had rolling road facilities for statutory testing. Would that have been the case back in 92-94? Joe

At our DMV we have rolling road tests. I asked the lady at the inspection station if she preffered me to insert the FWD, she declined, saying for AWD vehicles they do a standing rev test, and that I'd probably fair better emissions-wise by doing the latter.

It does I suppose prove the point that the FWD fuse can be put in place for these "Technical" tests.

I know it's hard to see sometimes and might take up too much time for you to do, but you might try checking the smiley's after something I post... They are usually a sign that I am joking around... Let me tell you why you probably didn't notice a difference when you put the fuse in. One reason is because the AWD Auto tranny's are FWD bias... IF your clutch packs are in good working condition and everything is fine then you should get 50/50 when you floor it (or something like that)... The Car is going to feel like a FWD car almost all the time on dry pavement, with the fuse in or out... Unless you do a manual swap... In which case you can tell a little bit of a difference when you use the WRX 5MT... Not I've never driven a 6MT in an SVX, but I can tell you that in the STi, it makes a WORLD of difference over the WRX with the 5MT... That's all down to the diffs (and alittle bit to the engine and gear ratios)... Smile, you're day will get better It's Friday ~ Chris

As Long As We Are Here
Does putting the Fuse in disengage the RWD portion enough that I can tow the SVX behind my RV with a tow dolly? Without damage to the transmission?

I've toyed with hooking up a double-throw switch, one way activates FWD mode, middle is normal AWD, other position applies full power to the transfer solenoid for 4WD lockup... But I dunno if I'd fry something so I'm hesitant to do it..

People have done it to their Legacy transmissions. However, I don't really see the point when the TCU will go up to 50/50 when necessary and being 100/0 doesn't do anything for you anyways.

I think I posted that I have a switch on my Leggie. TRUST ME It does NOT like being in FWD mode. It doesn't handle right, it's a wheelspinning beast, and can you say "snap oversteer"!
I installed the switch because the hood on my Leggie is hard to open. If I'm alone, and have a flat I can't get to the AWD fuse because the hood requires 2 ppl to open. (1 on the release, 1 on the hood). The big advantage, if I think that torque bind is starting, I can disengage the AWD on the fly for diagnosis.

I've gotten sticky hoods open by holding the hood release out and smacking the corner of the hood with an open hand a few times, usually is enough to make it pop up.

I destroyed my transmission 3 years ago by racing around in FWD mode, back when my car was fast and I could take an SRT4 off the line.. Don't do any of this.
Ricochet man I gotta say I'm suprised, you've been using the site 2 years and never came across the function of this fuse? To be fair, I never understood the implications of it fully until well after I destroyed my tranny about 2 years after getting it.

Did your front diff essentially eat itself when you were running in FWD mode?

No, that happened last week while in AWD mode with no power going to the rear due to the solenoids being fried when I ran in FWD mode. When this happened, I think my tires were about to break traction, but the diff broke instead.
I have to say though, driving on ice for months at a time with bad solenoids was probably the worst thing to happen to it.
