My first "maybe" SVX ??
Hi Folks, I have been on this forum for a while but havent posted much just learning since I dont have one....YET?
I know of a 94 SVX with 177K on it and the seller dropped the price to 500.00! The downside is that it doesnt go over 25MPH (wont come out of first gear). The rest is very nice, no rust, interior/exterior is great. I have a few options: Have it towed to a national chain like Aamco and have them fix it for max 3500 ( or could be less) and Id have a nice running/looking 94 for under 4K. Or I could have to put on a carrier and taken to Florida, where Im going to live? My main concern is Ill have to drive it about 1000 miles shortly after getting it and I dont know what else is possibly wrong. My brother lives in the same town that it is in and has seen it but not running. He will do that next week. The seller claims that the engine starts right up and goes into Drive just fine but wont go any higher gears. I suppose Im on the fence about having it towed to Aamco drop 4K and then it not making the trip. Any thought or advice? This seems like a good deal to me even for 4K??? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. |

Danger Will Robenson !!!!! Don't take it to AAMCO!!! All of the members who I know that have used them have had nothing but trouble. I would take it to Subaru and have them do it for about the same price and they would have a warrenty. AAMCO says that they do until you need something done. Or, have some one else pick up a Subaru remanufactured tranny and install it for you. Just my thought.

Just another thought
5mt or 6mt conversion might be a good idea for you too.

Thanks Guys
I thought folks would be all over the fact of a decent 94 with a bad tranny for 500 bones. What is TSI? I cant see a subi dealership NOT bending me over on a tranny or rebuilding it? I have an 88XT now and I have only bought parts there that nobody else had..
Thanks for the warning on Aamco. I highly doubt that Ill go that route. I been hunting for a decent one for a year now and I think Im just too excited about it, and ready to make a bad decision. I think Ill wait until I can get one all in one piece with a good tranny and put the cooler on it. Any other suggesstions?? Cheers Chris |

Hmm....have a garage, tools, and a little spare time? May want to consider doing the work yourself on it if possible. Its gratifying and you save alot of money too.
500 bucks is a good deal for an svx w/o tranny. Seems like it is in pretty decent shape. Looks like itll clean up really nice too. I say go for it if it runs

Just noticed...New jersey plates. Is the car in jersey? Hehe....you could have it sent to be fixed before you even get it home at the best transmission shop in NJ. Great work and low rates. Contact Tom'sSVX or AvPPoW, youll get btter labor rates than any other shop around...Shamless plug for friends

Is it FWD or AWD?
Most of the tranny problems have been in AWDs but since it's a '94 I thought I'd ask. Good luck and welcome to the family! Dan |

Thanks Eric
Actually, I have been talking to Tom about working on it but I dont think he has the time. Also, Im guessing but the car is about 100 miles from where he is so Id have to eat the tow costs. Since only my brother has seen the car (Im out of state for a while) it just seems like a gamble if there is anything else on the car that needs work.
Im actually talking to Tom about his 92. He still needs to do a few things on it which is great since I dont need it until early July. I would love to tackle the job myself but we are in the middle of moving to FL and no time/space for it.. I currently have an 88XT that I have done most of the work on and you are right it is very rewarding. I started tinkering with MG's a while back and had a ball... Who is the other person you mentioned in NJ? Thanks Chris |

There is lignt at the end of the tunnel!
Hey Guys, I just had a long chat with John (AvPPoW) and I think I will go that route. It is just to nice a deal to pass up, as yall have said.
John is going to take a look at it for me and give it the once over. Now my big decision is to go with the 4.44 auto or the 5 speed and coughing up the 1500 difference? Decisions/ Decisions?? HA HA Ill keep the crew posted on what happens.. Cheers Chris |

Good luck. I would be more than happy to help but right now I need to finish my teal and then I have to turn the world upside down for SVXride's new wheels. Then Myxaplix is next in line for some work to be done. Sorry but these guys have been waiting a while for me to finish up school and open the shop again. I wish u the best of luck

Tom, Since you are really backed up that must mean you do great work as the forum says. I fully understand about being in line behind other folks that have been waiting thanks for your advice.
John was telling me there is whole group of folks in that area NJ and some just on his street. I look forward to meeting them. Cheers Chris |
